The stimulus for this study sprung from reflections on good Biblical leadership needed in higher education today - leadership that empowers students to achieve their educational goals and succeed in life. This motivation led to the consideration of two presently important domains in higher education: servant leadership and student engagement. -- This study sought to provide a response to three research questions by looking at related empirical research (in universities, colleges and organizations), and relevant Biblical and theological material: 1) What elements characterize the practice of servant leadership and student engagement among academic leaders and faculty? 2) What is the nature of Biblical servant leadership as modelled and taught by Jesus Christ. 3) What are the implications of the study for academic leaders and faculty in Christian higher education institutions in Kenya? The reviewed literature in chapter two showed that the practice of servant leadership among academic leaders and faculty does the following: it promotes job satisfaction among staff, it boosts the emotional health of an institution, it breeds faculty development, it enriches student learning, and facilitates healing and wholeness among students. On the other hand, the practice of servant leadership among academic leaders and faculty helps to enhance of deep learning among students, raising awareness of students learning difficulties, and integrating students' lives with campus community life. In chapter three, the nature of Biblical servant leadership as modelled and taught by Jesus Christ, was characterized by being a "servant" and a "slave", implying a humble spirit focused on serving others. Jesus Christ himself was the ultimate model of servant leadership and the highest model of an engaging teacher of all time who utilized teachable moments, challenged the students' minds, and moved from surface teaching (involving facts and opinions), to deep teaching (involving heart convictions) . Christian academic leaders and faculty must display a servant attitude towards students entrusted to them. -- The grand implication of the study is for institutional leadership and faculty to develop and nurture a campus environment based on mutual service to one another -- an environment where students are cared for, loved ('giving them what they need, even if it is not what they want'), and freely engage in the most productive learning activities and experiences (in and outside of the classroom) in order to thrive emotionally, academically, and socially. Recommendations for further study include: 1) conducting a mixed method to determine the relationship between servant leadership and student engagement among academic leaders and faculty. 2) Conducting a study that probes into the relationship between emotional healing and positive learning outcomes among students in colleges/universities.

Abstract: This study focused on faculty perceptions of organizational culture and collegiality at denominationally affiliated Christian colleges and universities in the Pacific Northwest. It was found that while faculty members perceive tension around their experience of organizational culture, the extent of their relationships as cultivated through formal and informal development opportunities contributes to strong collegiality. Additionally, this study explored how denominational affiliation [is] perceived by faculty. A short study of Acts 15 and how the early Christian community responded to difficult circumstances and different cultural backgrounds was undertaken to more fully understand how Scripture teaches followers of Jesus to live and work in community. //p// Through convenient purposeful sampling, 19 faculty members from 3 different denominationally affiliated institutions in the Pacific Northwest were interviewed using a semi-structured interview. Additionally, the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) was completed by two of the participating institutions. The participants were representative of the larger faculty bodies at each institution, including faculty rank, length of tenure, and department. //p// The findings from the research indicated that faculty perceptions of organizational culture are dependent upon faculty relationships with administrators, and whether administrators value their voice, both individually and collectively. The study also found that collegiality is an important factor in whether or not faculty members are able to live amidst the competing tensions of their work, including busyness, institutional growth, and institutional change. Additionally, it was found that collegiality seems to be strengthened through participation in formal and informal faculty development programs. //p// This study also set out to explore the perceived impact of denomination on faculty perceptions of organizational culture and collegiality. Participants noted the importance of denominational affiliation for the institution, especially in terms of giving the institution a unique place to stand in the midst of a competitive higher education market. Yet, the study also found that for the participants, the most important aspect of their work is that they daily get to point students to Jesus Christ, a calling many of them described as more important than denominational affiliation, though denominational affiliation might have some determination on how this is done.

The application of servant-leadership principles in the educational sector has gained renewed attention at a time when the popularity of online learning has increased exponentially. The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental correlational study was to investigate the presence of organizational servant-leadership within a university located in the western United States and to determine whether or not perceptions of servant leadership were related to satisfaction with e-learning experience. The servant-leader model provided the theoretical framework for the study. A total of 68 doctoral students and 25 faculty/staff completed an online version of the Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) survey. Additionally, 65 doctoral students completed the Distance Education Learning Environments Survey (DELES). The findings revealed that participants perceived moderate levels of servant-leadership exhibited system-wide. The doctoral students expressed overall satisfaction with e-learning (M = 4.17; SD = 0.55), as scored on a 5-point DELES scale. However, a Pearson correlational analysis failed to determine a statistically significant relationship between student perceptions of servant-leadership and satisfaction with e-learning (r = 0.02, p = 0.88). The results of the study extended ongoing research regarding the relationship between student perceptions of servant-leadership and overall satisfaction with their e-learning experience. Future research involving a more diverse online learning population is recommended.
