Since every investigator desires to understand the basic principles underlying every new phenomenon, the author is impelled to disclose important facts divulged to him; and these facts are understated rather than exaggerated. He regrets the appearance of egotism, but this was unavoidable in a personal narrative. Nor does he shrink from the censure or odium which some may heap upon him for his temerity in undertaking to investigate these mysteries and publish the facts. But he hopes the reader will attach no blame to any member of his family who acted under his guidance. Of the Sequel, only one word. It consists mainly of discussions and familiar dialogues held between the spirits and the author, who acted as the writing medium. It was produced after the true nature of the Spirits was discovered. A notable fact is, that the Sequel opens with an Intro duction and closes with a Conclusion, dictated by spirits.
