L'adolescence, période d'évolution et de maturation, marque le début des relations sexuelles. L'importance du nombre d’IVG chez les jeunes met la question de la contraception des adolescents au coeur des préoccupations de santé publique. Les pratiques effectives des jeunes dans ce domaine étant mal connues, cette enquête cherche à évaluer les connaissances, perceptions et comportements des adolescents concernant la contraception. Une enquête qualitative par entretiens individuels a été réalisée chez des élèves de deux lycées professionnels de la région PACA. Ses résultats ont été analysés avec le logiciel NVivo9. 46 élèves de 15 à 18 ans ont été interrogés (36 filles, 10 garçons). L’analyse révèle qu’ils se sentent majoritairement bien informés, mais que leurs connaissances restent très souvent lacunaires voire fausses. Les principales sources d’information sont leurs parents et les médias. Ils apprécient les interventions extérieures au cadre scolaire menées par l’infirmière et le « planning ». Les adolescentes souhaitent idéalement être accompagnées par leur mère pour une première demande de contraception plutôt que d’aller de façon anonyme au « planning ». Le gynécologue reste l’acteur de santé de référence, le médecin généraliste est peu consulté. Pour les jeunes, l’accès à la contraception est limité par la communication familiale, la peur de la consultation et de l’examen gynécologique, leurs faibles moyens financiers. La communication familiale est l’élément clé de l’éducation sexuelle, le rôle informateurs des parents est donc à valoriser. Au niveau scolaire, les interventions variées, annuelles et précoces, favoriseraient le dialogue et remotiveraient les jeunes. Le médecin généraliste doit trouver sa place. Une consultation de prévention obligatoire permettrait de développer une relation de confiance, basée sur le secret médical et l’absence de jugement. Dans ce contexte, la maison des adolescents, centre d’accueil et d’écoute des mineurs, est une source à développer.

Not everyone is a friend of the manifold abbreviations that have by now beCome a part of the scientific language of medicine. In order to avoid misunderstanding these abbreviations, it is wise to refer to a reliable dic tionary, such as this one prepared by Heister. The abbreviation ED means, for instance, effective dose to the pharmacologist. However, it might also stand for emetic dose. Radiologists use the same abbreviation for erythema dose, and ED could also mean ethyl dichlorarsine. A com mon meaning of ECU is European currency unit, a meaning that might not be very often in scientific medical publications. ECU, however, also means environmental control unit or European Chiropractic Union. Hopefully, those making inventions and discoveries will make use of Heister's dictionary before creating new abbreviations when preparing manuscripts for scientific publications. It is a very worthwhile goal not to use the same abbreviation for several different terms, especially if it is already widely accepted to mean only one of them. It may be impossible, however, to achieve this goal in different scientific disciplines. Therefore, although it is wise for the abbreviations used in a publication to be defined, it is also very helpful for readers and writers to use a dictionary such as this one. The author deserves our warmest thanks since we know that compiling such a comprehensive dictionary is based upon incredibly hard effort.

Since the end of the civil conflict in 2002, Sierra Leone has worked hard on rebuilding its health and social system. Although progress has been made in reducing maternal mortality, the number of women who die as a result of complications during pregnancy and/or childbirth is still one of the highest in the world. The high number of pregnant girls and teenage mothers has severe health and social consequences and contributes to the problem of maternal mortality in Sierra Leone. KIT and partners in Sierra Leone and the Netherlands have joined forces with the Government of Sierra Leone to investigate and address teenage pregnancy through knowledge sharing capacity building and the development of interventions. This work is carried out within the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Sierra Leone, one of the programs that make up the MDG5 Meshwork for improving Maternal Health*. This report includes the justification, methodology, results and recommendations of a qualitative study interviewing teenage girls who were pregnant or had been pregnant, and focus group discussions with their peers, elders and leaders in various communities in Moyamba, Kailahun, Kambia and Bo. The report describes the stories of the girls who became pregnant, the reasons for their pregnancy and the consequences of their pregnancy for them, their family and the man/boy who impregnated the girl. These stories were used in the training of health workers and for the development of a community education strategy. The report formulates implications and recommendations for further policy and strategy development for adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Sierra Leone. The latter are also based on the outcomes of a discussion of implications during a dissemination meeting of the results in Sierra Leone. *Part of the knowledge strengthening component of the MDG5 Meshwork Public Private Partnerships Programme for the improvement of Maternal Health in Sierra Leone.

Most women who die from cervical cancer, particularly in developing countries, are in the prime of their life. They may be raising children, caring for their family, and contributing to the social and economic life of their town or village. Their death is both a personal tragedy, and a sad and unnecessary loss to their family and their community.
