Users of online social networking communities are disclosing large amounts of personal information, putting themselves at a variety of risks. This research investigates mechanisms for socially appropriate privacy management in online social networking communities. As a first step, I examine the role of interface usability in current privacy settings. To examine this, I use an iterative prototype to present an audience oriented view of profile information. After two iterations of prototype development, results show that providing an audience oriented view significantly improves the users' understanding of privacy settings.

This synthesis lecture provides a survey of work on privacy in online social networks (OSNs). This work encompasses concerns of users as well as service providers and third parties. Our goal is to approach such concerns from a computer-science perspective, and building upon existing work on privacy, security, statistical modeling and databases to provide an overview of the technical and algorithmic issues related to privacy in OSNs. We start our survey by introducing a simple OSN data model and describe common statistical-inference techniques that can be used to infer potentially sensitive information. Next, we describe some privacy definitions and privacy mechanisms for data publishing. Finally, we describe a set of recent techniques for modeling, evaluating, and managing individual users' privacy risk within the context of OSNs. The social benefit derived from Online Social Networks (OSNs) can lure users to reveal unprecedented volumes of personal data to an online audience that is much less trustworthy than their offline social circle. Participation in social networking sites has dramatically increased in recent years. Services such as Friendster, Tribe, or the Facebook allow millions of individuals to create online profiles and share personal information with vast networks of friends - and, often, unknown numbers of strangers. In this paper we study patterns of information revelation in online social networks and their privacy implications. We analyze the online behavior of more than 4,000 Carnegie Mellon University students who have joined a popular social networking site catered to colleges. We evaluate the amount of information they disclose and study their usage of the site's privacy settings. We highlight potential attacks on various aspects of their privacy, and we show that only a minimal percentage of users changes the highly permeable privacy preferences.
