Abstract: Abstract The purpose of the present study was to introduce a voice output communication aid (VOCA) to three children with severe mental handicap and to investigate the possibility of these children to acquire the use of the VOCA for basic communication needs. Results indicated that all three subjects showed significant improvement in the use of the VOCA to make requests for twelve items in three routine activities after intervention. The results illustrated that assistive communication devices may be successfully used by individuals with severe mental handicap. The use of the VOCA by the subjects across different settings and communication partners were also evaluated to investigate their generalization skills. Results varied across subjects. Two subjects were able to generalize the use of the VOCA to an untrained environment but were unable to generalize the use of the VOCA to an unfamiliar communication partner. The remaining subject was not able to generalize the learned communication skills to a new environment nor an unfamiliar communication partner. In addition, the results of the comprehension probes indicated that improvement in speech comprehension could be an additional benefit to learning to communicate with a VOCA. The implications of these results and recommendations for future research are discussed. iv DOI: 10.5353/th_b2684058 Subjects: Voice output communication aids Children with mental disabilities - Education
