Cracking Facebook

Cracking Facebook PDF Author: Maria Leena Korpijaakko
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9463002111
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 157

Book Description
This book presents a Facebook study on members of the Cusp Generation, or those born before the “great digital divide” of 1995. This delineation allows for a discussion on the possible socio-cultural implications of Facebook use for people of all ages. Members of the Cusp Generation are in a unique position as “part digital natives” to easily acquire and use new media technologies, while being more critically aware of the personal, social, and cultural effects that may arise from them thanks to having some memory of the pre-digital era. Drawing on identity theories rooted in critical theory and cultural studies, the author shows that there are potential constrictions on people’s agency in their Facebook use caused by consumer discourse, Facebook’s hyperreal nature and structure, psychological predispositions, and the potential for avatar attachment. In raising concerns over the impacts of technology-based communication, this book explores how the medium of Facebook extends and exacerbates processes of offline social reproduction and discusses how the positive social and political aspects of Facebook can be enhanced. The findings contribute to academic discussions in the fields of cultural studies and Education and can be applied to the development of critical media literacy for curriculum and pedagogy.

Antisocial Media

Antisocial Media PDF Author: Siva Vaidhyanathan
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190841184
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
A fully updated paperback edition that includes coverage of the key developments of the past two years, including the political controversies that swirled around Facebook with increasing intensity in the Trump era. If you wanted to build a machine that would distribute propaganda to millions of people, distract them from important issues, energize hatred and bigotry, erode social trust, undermine respectable journalism, foster doubts about science, and engage in massive surveillance all at once, you would make something a lot like Facebook. Of course, none of that was part of the plan. In this fully updated paperback edition of Antisocial Media, including a new chapter on the increasing recognition of--and reaction against--Facebook's power in the last couple of years, Siva Vaidhyanathan explains how Facebook devolved from an innocent social site hacked together by Harvard students into a force that, while it may make personal life just a little more pleasurable, makes democracy a lot more challenging. It's an account of the hubris of good intentions, a missionary spirit, and an ideology that sees computer code as the universal solvent for all human problems. And it's an indictment of how "social media" has fostered the deterioration of democratic culture around the world, from facilitating Russian meddling in support of Trump's election to the exploitation of the platform by murderous authoritarians in Burma and the Philippines. Both authoritative and trenchant, Antisocial Media shows how Facebook's mission went so wrong.

Suppose that person would stop at nothing to further their vendetta, even enlisting co-conspirators in various state agencies. This is the true story of one man's journey through a crooked and corrupt justice system, and how the people within that system deviously collaborated to destroy his life. Full of deceit, vindictiveness and depravity, Facets of Deception is the story of Graham L. Stowe. The real story. It's easy to retrieve online court records, read an article or view a news clip and be duped into believing you know the facts. Only one side of the story is represented in those outlets and the truth gets lost. Graham isn't perfect, but he is not the monster the media has portrayed. Over a decade ago, certain events occurred and Graham was sentenced to almost 40 years in a state mental institution-an astonishing term. He is not dangerous. He is not mentally ill and he was described as the most trusted patient at the facility... until he escaped, becoming a fugitive. There are many who do not want this book published. They fear being exposed for their roles in this conspiracy. For many years, out of respect for some, Graham kept his story to himself. The time has come for his side to be known. Graham offers full disclosure. Dozens of confidential documents have been included in this book to prove the truth. Graham's is an important story. It takes place in Wisconsin and could happen to anyone...even you!

ISBN: 0812697200
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en

And with plenty of new perspectives on Twitter and Web 2.0 along the way, this fun, thought-provoking book is a serious and significant contribution for anyone working with social media, whether in academia, journalism, public relations, activism, or business. Exploring far-reaching questions — Can our interactions on Facebook help us care about each other more? Does Facebook signal the death of privacy, or (perhaps worse yet) the death of our desire for privacy? — Facebook and Philosophy is vital reading for anyone involved in social networks today.
