Research has examined sibling relationships among families dealing with challenging life circumstances such as parental divorce or other high-conflict situations. These studies have primarily focused on the congruency and compensatory hypotheses of relationships to understand how sibling relate to each other in difficult family circumstances. The congruency hypothesis suggests that sibling relationships are reflective of parental or parent-child relationships. In contrast, the compensatory hypothesis contends that sibling relationships can act as buffering in families dealing with high conflict. Few studies have examined these conceptual frameworks as they relate to how adult siblings cope with a parent with mental illness. The present qualitative study examined first-person accounts of young adult siblings with mothers with mental illness (anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder). A multiple perspectives research design was used to examine the accounts of 10 adult siblings from five families to understand their views of sibling relationships and family ties. Participants completed individual semi-structured interviews in which they discussed their relationships with their mother, father, and siblings, caregiving experiences, their personal mental health, and positive experiences related to having a mother with mental illness. Qualitative content analysis found support for both the congruency and compensatory hypotheses of sibling relationships among families living with parental mental illness. Findings also highlighted the potential for positive experiences and growth, as well as the significance of social support, for young adults who have a mother with mental illness. Implications of study findings for research and clinical practice are discussed.

This open access book assembles landmark studies on divorce and separation in European countries, and how this affects the life of parents and children. It focuses on four major areas of post-separation lives, namely (1) economic conditions, (2) parent-child relationships, (3) parent and child well-being, and (4) health. Through studies from several European countries, the book showcases how legal regulations and social policies influence parental and child well-being after divorce and separation. It also illustrates how social policies are interwoven with the normative fabric of a country. For example, it is shown that father-child contact after separation is more intense in those countries which have adopted policies that encourage shared parenting. Correspondingly, countries that have adopted these regulations are at the forefront of more egalitarian gender role attitudes. Apart from a strong emphasis on the legal and social policy context, the studies in this volume adopt a longitudinal perspective and situate post-separation behaviour and well-being in the life course. The longitudinal perspective opens up new avenues for research to understand how behaviour and conditions prior or at divorce and separation affect later behaviour and well-being. The sibling subsystem and its affect on internalizing disorders and overall adjustment is one research area in divorce that seems to be lacking. Siblings have been shown to have tremendous impact on each other, whether that be a supportive and nurturing relationship that can act as a buffer for problems after divorce, or a relationship that is filled with increased conflict and rivalry for parental attention and resources (Sheehan, Darlington, Noller, & Feeney, 2004). It is important to explore the positive effects that siblings can have on one another during types of divorce so they can be utilized as another tool for decreasing the negative affects of divorce. Parental divorce affects adolescents' emotions, routines, habits, occupations and relationships. The current body of research indicates that parental divorce leads to many unfavourable social, behavioural, and mental health outcomes for adolescents. This dissertation explores the daily lives and occupations of adolescents and young adults surrounding the transition of a parental divorce or marital separation. This thesis contains four manuscripts in addition to the introductory and final reflection chapters. The first manuscript explores the current North American literature relating to adolescent life surrounding a parental divorce or marital separation, ranging form 1998 to 2014. The second manuscript provides an overview of visual methodologies allowing for a deeper understanding of the utility of visual methodologies within the field of occupational science. The third manuscript presents the findings of a critical narrative exploration regarding adolescent life surrounding parental divorce or separation. The third manuscript describes a study that is analyzed using an occupational science lens and explores the themes brought forward by the participants. These findings are compared to the current available literature presented in the first manuscript. The final manuscript presents a study that utilizes a visual methodological approach to explore participants' created visual messages about their experiences of parental divorce or separation. Participants were invited to address their messages to an audience of their choice with the hopes of helping future adolescents experiencing parental divorce navigate the transition and coping processes. This thesis contributes new knowledge to the growing body of information regarding adolescent life surrounding the transitions related to a parental divorce. It has expanded the limited research that approaches the topic from the frameworks of qualitative research, critical inquiry, asset-based research, and participatory approaches. It also uniquely explores the concept of human occupation as it relates to transition and coping surrounding a parental divorce or separation. This work has implications for the future methodologies and research questions for studies exploring adolescent and young adult life, occupations, and transitions surrounding a parental divorce or marital separation.

This study utilized a family stress theory perspective to examine differences between young adults with married parents and those who experienced parental divorce and whether or not levels of perceived sibling support and perceptions of experiential discrepancy influence sibling relationship closeness following parental divorce. The sample was recruited using Amazon Mechanical Turk and consisted of young adults who experienced parental divorce, had continuously married parents, and had at least one, living, biological sibling. Participants who experienced parental divorce (N=107) were asked to report on the biological sibling that they felt closest to before their parents' divorce, while participants with married parents (N=197) were asked to report on the sibling that they felt closest to. The data were examined using paired-sample t-tests, independent samples t-tests, and multiple linear regression analysis. Significant differences were found for sibling relationship closeness and the affect dimension of relationship closeness for those with married parents. Significant differences were also found for the dimension of behavior, for those who experienced parental divorce. Experiential discrepancy was found be a significant indicator of sibling relationship closeness before the inclusion of the support variables and success of support seeking was found to be a significant predictor of sibling relationship closeness following parental divorce. The implications of the results will be discussed along with future directions.
