In many communities the mother-daughter relationship is not only vital in the younger years but also in the teen and young adult years. Several studies have explored a mother’s influence on her daughter’s views of the self, others, and the world in general. The mother-daughter relationship does not only impact personal morals and values but also the types of relationships the daughters gravitate to. In the African American community, many of the mother-daughter relationships are known to be similar in nature and/or dynamics throughout generations. Relationships that are tainted or known as toxic also seem to cycle throughout several generations. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore the impact of generational trauma amongst a family on the mother-daughter relationship within the African American community. This study will also seek to explore if the mother-daughter relationship influences a daughter’s self-identity and relationships. This study will also evaluate if there is a connection between family trauma and self-identity and preferred relationships. The theories guiding this study will be the life span developmental theory which has origin in many eighteenth and nineteenth century writers especially Johann Nikolaus Tetens and Adolphe Quetelet, Murray Bowen’s family systems theory as well as Black Feminist Thought. There is a need for this research as many young women in the African American community are longing to break generational curses of complex mother-daughter relationships. Many young women in the African American community believe that their views and personal bias were created independently. However, these views may be attributed to inadequate education about one’s family. Some innate values and beliefs may be present within the family for generations and simply passed down through the mother-daughter relationship. This research also contributes by fulfilling the need for African American female scholars to not only research but also interpret the experiences of African American women.

Interest in the mother-daughter relationship has never been greater, yet there are few books specifically devoted to the relationships between daughters and mothers of color. To fill that gap, this collection of original essays explores the mother-daughter relationship as it appears in the works of African, African American, Asian American, Mexican American, Native American, Indian, and Australian Aboriginal women writers. Prominent among the writers considered here are Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Maxine Hong Kingston, Cherrie Moraga, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Amy Tan. Elizabeth Brown-Guillory and the other essayists examine the myths and reality surrounding the mother-daughter relationship in these writers' works. They show how women writers of color often portray the mother-daughter dyad as a love/hate relationship, in which the mother painstakingly tries to convey knowledge of how to survive in a racist, sexist, and classist world while the daughter rejects her mother's experiences as invalid in changing social times. This book represents a further opening of the literary canon to twentieth-century women of color. Like the writings it surveys, it celebrates the joys of breaking silence and moving toward reconciliation and growth.

Using interview data from 16 African-American mothers with teenage daughters, this study employed grounded theory methodology integrated with the heuristic method to investigate affect experienced by African-American mothers who are in the developmental process of separation from their daughters. Results showed that the separation process was initiated when the daughters were between 12-14 years of age. the separation period was characterized as one of confusion and strain for mothers, with a recurring conflict of mothers pulling their daughters closer, in reaction to the daughters' behavior of pushing the mother away. Peer selection was identified as a major source of conflict between mothers and daughters. the study showed that mothers internalize blame for conflicts with their daughters as well as with other members of the household. the lack of being in control in regard to the relationship with the separating daughters was identified as a source of resentment for mothers. Spending time with their daughters was identified as a source of happiness for mothers. On the whole, research results demonstrated the utility of clinical observation and therapeutic sensitivity. Such constructs may explain the interplay between source and outcome, and suggest how mothers might become more equipped with knowledge, understanding, and realistic expectations during the emotional processes in the mother-daughter dyads. Research used environment, experience, perception, engrained habits, and family rituals to explain a myriad of situational conflict between mother and teen daughters. the results revealed self-reported histories of closeness and a gradual separation between mother and daughter. It was found that those similarities in mothers' history, personal stories, and interaction with their mothers, coincided with similarities in their daughters' behaviors and how they accepted or rejected their mother's authority. Analysis revealed a mutual dissatisfaction between mother and daughter, and a desire on the part of mothers to retain control and stabilize what they perceived as unbearable situations Implications for education and mental health settings were discussed.
