Explorations in Interpersonal Communication

Explorations in Interpersonal Communication PDF Author: Gerald R. Miller
Publisher: SAGE Publications, Incorporated
ISBN:
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
As interest in interpersonal communication grew among communication researchers during the late 70's, contemporary researchers in social psychology and sociology worked on the fields of personal perception, interpersonal attraction and non-verbal communication. The papers in this volume reflect the issues of concern to those researchers. 'Without exception, the contributors treat communication as it exists in the real world...This focus on research related to real problems, rather than to the study of communication in a vacuum is to be commended...the last article...is sufficiently interesting that it is like the end of a good movie...You will simply recommend it (and the entire book) to friends, as I am doing here.' -- Sou

Explorations in Stylistics

Explorations in Stylistics PDF Author: Andrew Goatly
Publisher: Equinox Publishing (UK)
ISBN:
Category : Language and languages
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
This book explores some of the developments in Stylistics since its pioneer, Roman Jakobson identified the patterning of the message as the poetic function. It analyses in turn Golding's Pincher Martin, Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Housman's A Shropshire Lad, Elizabeth Jennings' poem 'One Flesh', Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party, Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, and a range of poems by John Donne. The analyses show how Jakobson's emphasis on the message gives way to emphasis on the code or on undermining the code (in the Golding and Donne chapters), on the context (in the Rowling and Golding chapters), on the reader's response (in the Housman chapter), on the relationship between the addresser's and the addressee's shared assumptions and their use of pragmatic principles (in the Pinter and Ishiguro chapters). The pivotal Jennings' chapter shows how these different stylistic perspectives can be applied variously to the same text. This collection of essays will be especially useful for students of Stylistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level as it illustrates the use of a range of analytical tools: Systemic Functional Grammar's analysis of transitivity and theme; pragmatic theories of co-operation, politeness, presupposition and inferencing; and conceptual metaphor theory. Additionally it demonstrates central stylistic concepts such as foregrounding, and how to analyse rhythmical, lexical, grammatical and semantic patterning.

Norton's book gives a centrality to style which other books do not, and breaks with traditional treatments in that style and content are not studied separately, but examined as they occur in everyday interaction. Norton's departure from prevailing approaches to the study of style will be highly provocative, inviting testing and further inquiry, for his ideas have utility and practical applications. `(The author's) study of Communicator Style @is an exciting and thought-provoking book...(This book) can be a useful resource for teaching style as a functional ingredient of the total communication process.' -- Journal of Communication, Winter 1985 `...provides us with research tactics that in stud
