The ability to localize wireless transmitters in indoor environments is gaining increased interest for commercial and military applications. Conducting indoor localization with precision is an ever-growing need as the conventional Global Positioning System (GPS) is hampered in its ability to provide high resolution location information due to complex multipath scattering within buildings. Conventional localization schemes such as Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation often fall victim to the same constraints of GPS by means of ambiguous scattering caused by indoor environments leading to inaccurate DOA estimates. Improvements in indoor localization systems can inevitably enhance commercial marketing strategies, military search and rescue missions, wireless security in defense facilities, and even household security for intrusion detection. This dissertation has two primary thrusts. The first thrust addresses the exploitation of polarization diversity for optimal indoor localization performance. A system is developed to extract unique three-dimensional (3D) wireless channel characteristics by combining electromagnetic principles, signal processing techniques, and machine learning for indoor localization. Localization algorithms are developed to demonstrate localization robustness to transmitter polarization and the uniqueness of 3D spatial scattering. The second thrust addresses the degradation on DOA approaches by developing a DOA-based approach to localizing emitters in an indoor environment via machine learning. The approach utilizes spatial correlations between emitters in close-proximity in order to achieve robust localization performance. A theoretical derivation of the ratio of multipath scattering is then developed to improve localization characteristics for DOA-based and other localization solutions.
