Book Description
Abstract: Under a flexible inflation targeting regime, should policymakers avoid any reaction to movements in the foreign exchange market? Using data for six advanced open economies explicitly targeting inflation, the paper examines empirically whether real exchange rate disequilibria systematically affect the conduct of monetary policy. Estimates indicate that monetary policy responses in inflation-targeting, open economies have changed significantly, as the institutional framework for the conduct of monetary policy has evolved. In particular, an explicit target for core inflation and a greater use of the expectation channel of monetary policy appear to be key features of the newest policy framework. In this context, central banks are unlikely to react to regular fluctuations in the exchange rate

Asia in the Global Economy
Author: Ramkishen S. Rajan
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812791493
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
What is unique about this book? This book is intended for undergraduates, graduates and scientists in general. It introduces certain topics of natural products which are only taught in institutes of higher learning. Despite the fact that there exists a vast literature devoted principally or entirely to naturally occurring compounds, there are very few books or monographs of moderate length that provide an overall view of the field. There are many aspects of natural products that deserve a special emphasis that is unlikely to be encountered in a conventional course of organic chemistry. Among them are biosynthesis; metabolic transformations; and physiological and biological properties of some of the natural products. The field of the chemistry of natural products is so immense that it embraces an almost limitless scope of the compound types. This book contains specialized work that describes the chemistry of separate classes of compounds such as steroids, terpenes, alkaloids, sugars, carotenoids, fatty acids and so on. It also includes data on compounds isolated from various classes of organisms such as, lichens, bacteria, fungi are treated in special monographs. The topics in this book are unlikely to be found in general chemistry courses. The book covers the following topics of natural products: cannabinoids, toxic constituents from marine sources, natural sweeteners, generation of wines, biological markers, pheromones of insects and mammals, pest management and secondary natural chemicals formed by microorganisms. Among the authors of the reviews is Professor Raphael Mechoulam who received the Israel Prize for his work on active constituents (cannabinoids) of the Cannabis plant and Professor Douglas Kinghorn from University of Chicago who is the chief editor of "Journal of Natural Products."

Exchange Rate Regimes and Macroeconomic Management in Asia
Author: Tony Cavoli
Publisher: Hong Kong University Press
ISBN: 9622090532
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 249
Book Description
With the rise of China, India and the re-emergence of East Asia from the financial crisis of 1997–98, monetary issues in Asia have acquired great significance as the region holds the largest reserves in the world and consequently plays a major role in the global macro-economy. In addition, there are also a great variety of monetary policy regimes at play in the region – reflecting each country's needs and policy preferences. This volume explores monetary, exchange rate and macroeconomic policies in Asia. A particular question that is analysed is Asia's experience since the crisis with the use of monetary policy to manage the resurgence in capital inflows. It also examines the theoretical and policy issues associated with international capital flows, the increasing degree of integration of financial markets and exchange rates for emerging Asian economies. The book is unique in focussing on China, India and Southeast Asia, rather than just having a sub-regional or country-specific focus. Rigorous empirical analysis is applied to important practical policy issues. The book also provides accessible overviews of recent research relevant to the questions that are explored and is written throughout in a manner that is accessible to policy makers, students and business/financial journalists.

The Inflation-Targeting Debate
Author: Ben S. Bernanke
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226044734
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 469
Book Description
Over the past fifteen years, a significant number of industrialized and middle-income countries have adopted inflation targeting as a framework for monetary policymaking. As the name suggests, in such inflation-targeting regimes, the central bank is responsible for achieving a publicly announced target for the inflation rate. While the objective of controlling inflation enjoys wide support among both academic experts and policymakers, and while the countries that have followed this model have generally experienced good macroeconomic outcomes, many important questions about inflation targeting remain. In Inflation Targeting, a distinguished group of contributors explores the many underexamined dimensions of inflation targeting—its potential, its successes, and its limitations—from both a theoretical and an empirical standpoint, and for both developed and emerging economies. The volume opens with a discussion of the optimal formulation of inflation-targeting policy and continues with a debate about the desirability of such a model for the United States. The concluding chapters discuss the special problems of inflation targeting in emerging markets, including the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary.

Value-Based Management in an Open Economy
Author: Walter Amedzro St-Hilaire
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000778908
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 472
Book Description
This book investigates the relationship between strategy optimization mechanisms and the efficiency (performance and productivity) in the digital and open economy. The aim of this question on the interactions between strategies, performance, and market forms is to understand how, at the level of value-based management, productivity determines the optimized strategies and how the optimization process is modified according to the performance of the firm. Value-Based Management in an Open Economy: Optimizing Strategy to Improve Business and Performance outlines the conditions under which this relationship is negative, neutral, or positive in the banking sector. Applying economic and managerial principles, the book demonstrates that problems related to the competitive advantage can be successfully analyzed like all other business problems, using traditional tools of economics, finance, and strategy (provided that the dynamics of industry-specific interactions are considered). The author argues that the ability of firms to improve their performance depends on the structure in which these organizations compete and their ability to optimize their value-based management. Key features: Captures the diversity and the interconnection of management control and firm performance issues Analyzes the challenges of contemporary management control in order to provide transversal and sustainable strategic solutions Promotes understanding of the prospects of optimizing mechanisms This volume is intended primarily for those who will be called upon to work as researchers or professionals in the fields of corporate governance and value-based management. The book identifies the technical practices and proposes mechanisms to encourage growth and improve performance. The book will be helpful for renewing strategic approaches and value-based mechanisms in a digital and open economy.
