Experiments in Wave Record Analysis

Experiments in Wave Record Analysis PDF Author: Jose Luis Goncalves Cardoso
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Ocean waves
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
By examining the relationship of the individual waves in an ocean wave record and the power density spectrum (PDS), it is demonstrated that the PDS conventionally obtained using spectral analysis can be reasonably approximated, except at the very low frequency end, by a pseudo-power density spectrum constructed from the individual heights and periods contained in the record. The very low frequencies seen in the side bands of the PDS are examined as products of amplitude modulation by analogy with simulated wave records and as an indication of the presence of wave groups. In addition, wave groups are identified and their properties determined in 19 selected ocean wave records by integrating the wave record using the procedure of Funke and Mansard (1979). (Author).

Extreme Ocean Waves

Extreme Ocean Waves PDF Author: Efim Pelinovsky
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402083149
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Extreme, freak or rogue waves are produced by a number of physical mechanisms that focus the water-wave energy into a small area, due to wave instability, chaotic behaviour, dispersion (frequency modulation), refraction (presence of variable currents or bottom topography), soliton interactions, etc. During the past thirty years a number of physical models of the rogue wave phenomenon have been intensively developed. Numerous experimental, statistical and theoretical investigations are intended to understand the physics of the huge wave formation, its relation to the environmental conditions and to provide a freak wave design for engineering purposes. The book details the vast progress that has been achieved in the understanding of the physical mechanisms of rogue wave phenomenon in recent years. The selected articles address such issues as the formation of freak waves due to modulation instability of nonlinear wave field, physical and statistical properties of rogue wave generation in deep water and in shallow water, various models of nonlinear water waves, special analysis of nonlinear resonances between water waves and the relation between observations and freak wave theories. The book is written for specialists in the fields of fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, nonlinear physics, physical oceanography and geophysics, and for students learning these subjects.

Statistical Analysis of Visual Wave Observations and Gage/radar Measurements

Statistical Analysis of Visual Wave Observations and Gage/radar Measurements PDF Author: Marc Perlin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Analysis of variance
Languages : en
Pages : 64

Book Description
This report presents results of a study conducted to determine the variability of obsrvations made simultaneously by several different observers, to compare those observations with instrument measurements when available, and to look at the temporal variation of observed littoral conditions over a 25-hour period. Littoral Environment Observations (LEO) taken by individual observers were compared with the means of the observations obtained by all observers and with instrument-recorded data when available for a particular variable. Statistical analyses were performed for the different LEO variables to determine the following: (a) confidence intervals; (b) Correlation coefficients; (c) Standard deviations; (d) Consistency between observer and gage; (e) Effect of tides on estimation of parameters (i.e., did the estimates depend on the distance between observer and waves?); (f) The statistical wave height to which LEO wave heights should be compared. The field experiment was conducted at Duck, North Carolina, at the Field Research Facility (FRF) of the Coastal Engineering Research Center on 15-16 August 1978. Six observers simultaneously recorded hourly LEO observations. Concurrent wave measurements were made from the FRF pier with gages and radar.

Analysis of Data on Water Waves. Volume II. Mono Lake Field Experiment

Analysis of Data on Water Waves. Volume II. Mono Lake Field Experiment PDF Author: R. W. Whalin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 10

Book Description
The data from the 1965 Mono Lake test series agreed well with the analysis performed during the DASA wave program. The data should be analyzed in comparison to the predictions performed prior to the experiment in order to determine why the run-up predictions were consistently low by approximately 50%. The mathematical analysis was formulated for constructing theoretical wave trains from two mathematical models using empirical constants as the input for any condition in the deep water surface wave case. The theoretical wave trains can be easily modified by changing the parameters eta sub o and R sub o to agree with the experimental data.
