Book Description
Excerpt from Experiments in the Production of Crops on Alkali Land on the Huntley Reclamation Project, Montana The Surface soil on this tract is a very heavy impervious clay con taining alkali salts in amounts that are not tolerated by most crop plants. The physical character of the soil is such as to prevent natural leaching, and there has been an accumulation of the Salts in the surface soil. Underlying the surface soil, at depths varying from 5 to 8 feet, is a stratum of sand and gravel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Alkali Studies, II The Experiment Stations are supported for the purpose of scientific research in the problems of agriculture and they are located in different states in order that each Station may study, at close range, the conditions of the region that sur rounds it. From its location the chief problem of the W'yo ming Station has been given to it by nature, the study of ari dity, and as fast as possible the work of the Station has been concentrated on this subject. The chief difficulties in the way of agriculture in the arid region are two, the insufficient supply of water and the accumulation of soluble salts, known as alkali. The second of the these is a consequence of the first. Where watering is done by rain, pure water is added to the soil and drained off underneath, carrying with it the soluble salts of the soil. In irrigation, water containing salts is added to the soil and pure water evaporated from the surface. It was shown in Bulletin No. 24 that half a ton of alkali was added to each acre of the Sheridan Farm every year by irrigation and the land became completely useless until it was drained. Book Description
Excerpt from The Decomposition of the Fixed Alkalies and Alkaline Earths The second paper above mentioned is, for the most part, a description of similar experiments carried out upon the earths and alkaline earths. At first Davy had some difficulty in getting satisfactory results with these, but ultimately he succeeded in preparing moderate quantities of amalgams alkaline-earth metals and of magnesium. Only t it section of the paper which describes these successful experiments is now reprinted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
