Book Description
Excerpt from Experiments in International Administration The growth of Internationalism has found its most recent expression in the increasing demand for a League of Nations; but as to how this shall be constituted, with what powers it shall be clothed, and in What manner it shall function, there is the widest disagreement. Will it be a scheme of mutual guarantees alone, or will it possess a definite organization? Will it be possible to endow it with a practicable legislative, judicial, or executive organ? Book Description
Excerpt from Allied Shipping Control: An Experiment in International Administration IN the autumn of 1914 when the scientific study of the effects of war upon modern life passed suddenly from theory to history, the Division of Economics and History of the Carnegie Endow ment for International Peace proposed to adjust the programme of its researches to the new and altered problems which the War presented. The existing programme, which had been prepared as the result of a conference of economists held at Berne in 1911, and which dealt with the facts then at hand, had just begun to show the quality of its contributions; but for many reasons it could no longer be followed out. A plan was therefore drawn up at the request of the Director of the Division, in which it was proposed by means of an historical survey, to attempt to measure the economic cost of the War and the displacement which it was causing in the processes of civilization. Such an Economic and Social History of the World War', it was felt, if undertaken by men of judicial temper and adequate training, might ultimately, by reason of its scientific obligations to truth, furnish data for the forming of sound public opinion, and thus contribute fundamentally toward the aims of an institution dedicated to the cause of international peace. The Experiment in the History of Economics

The Experiment in the History of Economics PDF Author: Philippe Fontaine
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134287607
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 163

Book Description
Throughout the history of economic ideas, it has often been asserted that experimentation is impossible, yet, in fact, history shows that the idea of ‘experimentation’ has always been important, and as such has been interpreted and put to use in many ways. Rich in historical detail, the essays in this topical volume deal with such issues as laboratory experimentation, the observed transition from a post-war economics to a contemporary discipline, the contrasting positions of Friedrich Hayek and Oskar Morgenstern, the socio-economic experiments proposed by Ernest Solvay and Knut Wicksell, and a rigorous examination of the way in which economic models can or cannot be construed as valid experiments producing useful knowledge. A testament to the variety of ways in which experimentation has been of importance in the creation of economic knowledge, these wide-ranging essays will interest those seeking to expand their historical understanding of the discipline, be they theorists, historians, philosophers, advanced students or researchers.

Experiments Past

Experiments Past PDF Author: Jodi Reeves Flores
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789088902512
Category : Archaeology
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
With Experiments Past the important role that experimental archaeology has played in the development of archaeology is finally uncovered and understood. Experimental archaeology is a method to attempt to replicate archaeological artefacts and/or processes to test certain hypotheses or discover information about those artefacts and/or processes. It has been a key part of archaeology for well over a century, but such experiments are often embedded in wider research, conducted in isolation or never published or reported. Experiments Pasts provides readers with a glimpse of experimental work and experience that was previously inaccessible due to language, geographic and documentation barriers, while establishing a historical context for the issues confronting experimental archaeology today. This volume contains formal papers on the history of experimental methodologies in archaeology, as well as personal experiences of the development of experimental archaeology from early leaders in the field, such as Hans-Ole Hansen. Also represented in these chapters are the histories of experimental approaches to taphonomy, the archaeology of boats, building structures and agricultural practices, as well as narratives on how experimental archaeology has developed on a national level in several European countries and its role in encouraging a wide-scale interest and engagement with the past.

Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
Excerpt from Swiss Internment of Prisoners of War: An Experiment in International Humane Legislation and Administration The internment of sick and wounded prisoners of war in neutral countries is an event without precedent in past his tory. It has been tried for the first time in Switzerland in the course of recent months. Considering that the experience thus gained may prove of interest and perhaps of help in the United States, the Swiss Commission, at present in this country, has brought with it a hitherto unpublished official report on the subject. This report, by Hauser, the surgeon-general of the Swiss Army, who has been in charge of the internment in Switzerland of Austrian, Belgian, English, French, and German prisoners of war, tells the story of this great experience from its origin until the end of January, 1917.
