Book Description
Plasma electron oscillations were excited in experiments in which the essential conditions of the Bohm and Gross two-beam theory were reasonably fulfilled. Independent interpenetrating electron beams were passed through a plasma of much higher charge density; in traveling through the plasma the beam electrons ionized neutral atoms and thereby produced sufficient positive ions to compensate their own charge to a reasonably high degree. With boundary electrodes present, standing waves of longitudinal plasma electron oscillations were produced. It was established that, in agreement with theory, no velocity modulation of the beam electrons prior to their entering the plasma was needed in order to cause the buildup of large amplitude oscillations. Tests were made with apparatus designed specifically to avoid such modulation. (Author).

Physics of Intense Beams in Plasmas
Author: M.V Nezlin
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351424432
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 336
Book Description
Physics of Intense Beams in Plasmas is a comprehensive description of the interaction between extremely intense particle beams and plasmas. The emphasis is on experimental beam-plasma physics, but the necessary theory is also explained-much of which is innovative and original. Central to the book is the discussion of beam instabilities, emphasizing their hydrodynamic nature.

Book Description
This report deals with four features of self-generated u.h.f. oscilations in the gigacycle region in electron beam maintained plasmas in helium, neon, argon and mercur, at pressures of a few microns, operated at up to about 100 volts with an oxide coated thermionic cathode. (1) Frequency pulling has been found when the anode to cathode spacing is varied within certain limits, and is the more marked the less the divergence of the beam; production of a return beam from the anode may be enhanced if it is contaminated with cathode material. (2) The position of sharp onset of oscillatins along the beam has been measured from the abrupt appearence there of the 'spark' spectra He(II), Ne(II) and Hg(III), and has been found in this way to be determined roughly by the product of pressure, current and beam velocity. (3) Part at least of the fine structure of plasma concentration versus position curves along the beam has been shown to be due to falsification of probe data by the oscillating fields. (4) Results of some direct electron energy distribution measurements are given, which are in general accord with the theory of beam excitation of oscillations.

Investigation of Interaction of an Electron Beam with a Plasma
Frontiers in High Energy Density Physics
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 030908637X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 177
Book Description
Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

High-frequency Oscillations Resulting from the Interaction of an Electron Beam with Plasma
Author: G. P. Berezina
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 24
Book Description
Results are given of experiments on the detection and study of oscillations developed in a beam and plasma produced as the result of their interaction. The experiments were conducted under conditions where the electron Langmuir frequency of the plasma, was less than the electron cyclotron frequency. The conditions of wave excitation in the beam and plasma, their frequency spectra, phase velocities, amplification factors, electrical field intensity, and absolute values and spectral distribution of excited oscillation power are determined. Experimental results from measurement of frequencies, amplification factors and phase velocities of excited oscillations in the plasma are in satisfactory agreement with calculated data. (Author).
