Book Description
The objective was the measurement of the single pass FEL known as the High-Gain, Harmonic Generation FEL. The HGHG approach utilizes a laser-seeded FEL to produce amplified, longitudinally coherent, Fourier-transform- limited output at a harmonic of the seed laser. In the experiment performed at the Accelerator Test Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory, a seed CO2 laser at a wavelength of 1O.6mm produced saturated, amplified FEL output at the second-harmonic wavelength, 5.3mm. The HGHG FEL was demonstrated successfully. The duration of the output pulse was measured using a second-harmonic intensity autocorrelator, and the coherence length was measured using an interferometer. We also measured the energy distribution of the electron beam after ft exited the second undulatory, observing behavior consistent with that is expected at saturation. The intensity of the harmonic components of the output at 2.65 mm and 1.77 mm were determined relative to that of the 5.3-mm fundamental. Finally, using a corrector magnet upstream of the radiator, steering effects on the trajectories of the electron and light beams were studied.

Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Novel High-Gain Seeded Free-Electron Laser Schemes

Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Novel High-Gain Seeded Free-Electron Laser Schemes PDF Author: Chao Feng
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662490668
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
This dissertation focuses on the study of novel high-gain free-electron laser (FEL) operation schemes with external seed lasers. The technique of manipulating the phase space of the electron beam, which is widely used in novel seeded FEL schemes, is systematically studied. Several novel FEL schemes are proposed for the generation of intense coherent FEL pulses with short wavelength, sub-femtosecond pulse length or multiple carrier frequency properties, which meet the needs of FEL users. Results of experiments are described for the recently proposed FEL schemes such as echo-enabled harmonic generation and cascaded high-gain harmonic generation. New photon/electron beam diagnostic methods are also developed for these experiments and future high-gain FEL facilities.

Principles of Free-electron Lasers

Principles of Free-electron Lasers PDF Author: H.P. Freund
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780412725401
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 586

Book Description
This book is the definitive tutorial text and reference work on free electron lasers. Since the publication of the first edition in 1992 there has been a significant increase both in the number of free-electron lasers in use worldwide, and in the understanding of the various regimes for these devices. In order to maintain the position of this book as the most comprehensive and thorough reference and tutorial in the field, the authors have completely updated the book. In addition to updates and corrections to chapters in the first edition, new chapters have been added.

Free Electron Lasers

Free Electron Lasers PDF Author: S. Martellucci
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461337518
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 698

Book Description
The volume contains the proceedings of the 7th Course on Physics and Technology of Free Electron Lasers of the International School of Quantum Electronics, which was held in Erice (Italy) from 17 to 29 August 1980, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The level of this Course was much closer to a workshop than to a school, and "Advances in Free Electron Lasers" might have been an appropriate title. Many of the world's leading scientists in the field (among them, the inventor of FEL, J. M. J. Madey) were brought together to review the accomplishments of FEL experiments, as well various trends in FEL theory. In editing this material we did not modify the original manu scripts except to assist in uniformity of style. The papers. are presented without reference to the chronology of the Course but in the following topical arrangement: A. "Fundamentals of free electron lasers," a group of tutorial papers; B. "Free electron lasers operating in the Compton regime," where theories and experiments of FELs based on Compton scattering are reviewed; C. "Free electron lasers operating in the Raman regime," a dis cussion of FELs based on Raman scattering; D. "Optical klystrons," where the possibility of this class of FEL is discussed from a theoretical viewpoint; E.

High Gain, High Power Free Electron Laser: Physics and Application to TeV Particle Acceleration

High Gain, High Power Free Electron Laser: Physics and Application to TeV Particle Acceleration PDF Author: R. Bonifacio
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444598723
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
During the past few years the physics and technology of charged particle beams on which electron-positron linear colliders in the TeV region, storage rings from synchrotron radiation sources and Free Electron Lasers are based, has seen a remarkable development. The purpose of this series of schools is to address the physics and technology issues of this field, train young people and at the same time provide a forum for discussions on recent advances for scientists active in this field. The subjects chosen for this first course reflect the recent interest in TeV electron positron colliders, the possibility offered by Free Electron Lasers to power them and the developments in the production of high brightness electron beams.
