An experimental investigation of cavity-based flameholders with strut injectors in a supersonic flow is reported. In this ongoing research program, emphases are placed on understanding cavity-based flameholders and providing alternative methods for improving overall combustor performance in scramjet engines. Three different struts with fuel injectors are mounted near the cavity leading edge to study flame propagation and ignition of fuel in the core flow region. OH-PLIF (planar laser induced fluorescence) is used to identify the flame zone around the cavity and strut-wake regions over a range of conditions. Shadowgraphy is used to capture the flow features around the strut and cavity. In-stream probing is conducted to characterize the flow features associated with the different strut configurations. Stagnationtemperature profiles are obtained for all struts operating over the same conditions in the combusting-flow study. Two cavity fueling schemes are used to compare flameholder performance. Direct cavity air injection is found to improve combustion significantly. For each strut, upstream and downstream fueling schemes are compared over a range of conditions.--P. i.

Numerical studies were performed to examine different strut configurations to determine their mixing characteristics for possibly use with fuel-injector ports for round scram jet-combustor applications. Several strut configurations were tested to provide a better understanding of the flow physics, in terms of pressure, total pressure recovery, vorticity magnitude, streamlines, and velocity vectors. The conceptual strut designs were placed in a rectangular flow path, and the computations will be followed by an experimental program in the AFRL/RZA Research Cell 19 supersonic wind-tunnel facility, which has a rectangular cross-section area of 12.7 cm x 15.24 cm. The struts were sized, however, for eventual use in a 25.4 cm (10-inch) round combustor. The strut with a constant leading-edge angle and a moderately swept trailing edge seems to provide reasonably good mixing flow features without significantly compromising the total pressure recovery.

An investigation of supersonic combustion simulating conditions anticipated in propulsive systems for high altitude, high Mach number flight is described. A unique test facility in operation at the Aerospace Research Laboratories has the capability of simulating supersonic combustion conditions for flight Mach numbers near 12. The facility is considered unique because of its capability of providing conditions under which supersonic combustion can occur at low desities (1-4 psia) with diffusive mixing and with combustion resulting from auto-ignition. Experiments have been conducted with injector/combustor configurations to evaluate the ignition mechanism for axisymmetric streams of hydrogen and air and to evolve a combustion chamber design suitable for experimental study of sustained supersonic combustion. In a parallel theoretical phase, a numberical analysis of the combustion chamber flow field has been made by high speed computer; a parametric study of supersonic combustion in the diffusive hydrogen-air flow field over an air-jet Mach number range of 1.5 to 2.5 and a static pressure range of 1 to 3 psia was accomplished. Experimental data to-date have conclusively established the occurrence of sustained supersonic combustion in the diffusive hydrogen-air flow field at combustor entrance static pressures near 2.5 psia. Final report summarizes shortly main results of the quarterly reports and presents experimental results on self-ignition and combustion stabilization in supersonic flow using free recirculation zone. Tests are conducted at hypersonic facility TsAGI T-131B. Measurements are performed in a nearly matched supersonic jet at the exit of two-dimensional channel over Mach number range M=2.O-2.8 at stagnation temperature range Tt=1200-1400K. initial thickness of jet was equal 67 mm. Self-ignition and stabilization are obtained at Tt=1400K. Self-ignition was absent at Tt=1200K, 1300K. Thickness of free recirculation zone was about 25-30 mm.
