Experimental Rock Deformation - The Brittle Field

Experimental Rock Deformation - The Brittle Field PDF Author: M. S. Paterson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662117207
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 267

Book Description
This monograph deals with the part of the field of ex-' perimental rock deformation that is dominated by the phenomena of brittle fracture on one scale or another. Thus a distinction has been drawn between the fields of brittle und ductile behaviour in rock, corresponding more or less to a distinction between the phenomena of fracture and flow. It is hoped eventually to present a survey of the ductile field in a separate volume. The last chapter of this volume deals with the transition between the two fields. The scope of this survey has been limited to the mec.hanical properties of rock viewed as a material on the laboratory scale. Thus, the topic and approach is of a "materials science" kind rather than of a "structures" kind. We are dealing with only one part of the wider field of rock mechanics, which also includes structural or boundary value problems, for example, those of the stability of slopes, the collapse of mine openings, earth quakes, the folding of stratified rock, and the convec tive motion of the earth's mantle. One topic thus ex cluded is the role of jointing, which it is commonly necessary to take into account in applications in engi neering and mining, and probably often in geology too.

Experiments to Test a Systems Analysis of Brittle Fracture

Experiments to Test a Systems Analysis of Brittle Fracture PDF Author: G. T. Hahn

Book Description
The aim of this program has been to simplify the complex problem of fracture of metals by a systems approach: for a given type or mode of failure, the basic simple parameters and mechanisms controlling failure are identified, these are treated individually by experiment and analysis, and the individual results are combined into a description of the failure process yielding predictions which can be checked by experiment. Except for the last portion of the program, the experiments were conducted on center cracked steel foils. In the earlier stages of work the analysis concentrated on predictions of the development of plasticity with loading and the conditions at which crack propagation begins. The work was then directed toward the problem of rapid crack propagation basing the analysis on previous results. The work has yielded a detailed description of crack propagation under plane stress conditions both in the form of an analytic model and experimental observations of crack speeds. A method for quantitatively measuring the energy absorption rate of a material during crack propagation has been tested. This method holds promise as a way of characterizing the intrinsic resistance to unstable crack propagation. Some of the concepts and methods developed have been applied to the very complex problem of calculating crack speeds in pipelines. (Author).

Proceedings of an international conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation

Proceedings of an international conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation PDF Author: George C. Sih
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401092532
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 707

Book Description
The planning meeting for a conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation was held at M.LT. in February 1971 and attended by research workers from several industrial, governmental and academic organizations. It was felt that a more specialized meeting would provide a better opportunity for both U.S. and foreign researchers to exchange their ideas and views on dynamic fracture, a subject which is seldom emphasized in national or international fracture conferences. Dynamic crack propagation has been a concern to specialists in many fields: continuum mechanics, metallurgy, geology, polymer chemistry, orthopedics, applied mathematics, as well as structural design and testing. It impinges on a wide variety of problems such as rock breaking and earthquakes, pressure vessels and line pipes, comminution and the per formance of armament and ordnance, etc. Advances have been numerous, covering theories and experiments from both the microscopic and macro scopic points of view. Hence, the need for comparing the theoretical and experimental results and bridging the gaps between the atomistic and continuum approaches must be constantly emphasized. It also appeared that the overall problem of dynamic fracture could benefit from a con solidation of crack models proposed for the various types of materials: metals, ceramics, composites, rocks, glasses, polymers and biomaterials.

The Fracture of Brittle Materials

The Fracture of Brittle Materials PDF Author: Stephen W. Freiman
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118769708
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Provides a modern, practical approach to the understanding and measurement procedures relevant to the fracture of brittle materials This book examines the testing and analysis of the fracture of brittle materials. Expanding on the measurement and analysis methodology contained in the first edition, it covers the relevant measurements (toughness and strength), material types, fracture mechanics, measurement techniques, reliability and lifetime predictions, microstructural considerations, and material/test selection processes appropriate for the analysis of the fracture behavior of brittle materials. The Fracture of Brittle Materials: Testing and Analysis, Second Edition summarizes the concepts behind the selection of a test procedure for fracture toughness and strength, and goes into detail on how the statistics of fracture can be used to assure reliability. It explains the importance of the role of microstructure in these determinations and emphasizes the use of fractographic analysis as an important tool in understanding why a part failed. The new edition includes a significant quantity of material related to the fracture of biomaterials, and features two new chapters—one on thermal shock, the other on the modeling of the fracture process. It also expands on a discussion of how to treat the statistics of fracture strength data to ensure reliability. Provides practical analysis of fracture toughness and strength Introduces the engineering and materials student to the basic concepts necessary for analyzing brittle fracture Contains new statistical analysis procedures to allow for the prediction of the safe design of brittle components Contains real-world examples to assist the reader in applying the concepts to their own research, material development, and quality-control needs The Fracture of Brittle Materials: Testing and Analysis, Second Edition is an important resource for all students, technicians, engineers, scientists, and researchers involved in the study, analysis, creation, or testing of ceramics.

Dynamic Fracture

Dynamic Fracture PDF Author: K. Ravi-Chandar

Book Description
Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture
