War Wounds

War Wounds PDF Author: Elizabeth Stewart
Publisher: Exisle Publishing
ISBN: 1877568880
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
The history of warfare and the history of medicine are closely intertwined. War has been an accelerator of advances in medical treatment and surgery. As modern weaponry became more destructive, medicine developed techniques and procedures to deal with the volume and nature of battlefield casualties. Preventative medicine has also increased the effectiveness of fighting forces through improvements in soldiers' health and disease resistance. This book is a collection of chapters by historians, medical practitioners and researchers, former and serving military medical officers, surgeons, nurses and veterans, who explore the impact of war, wounds and trauma through the historical record, reported narratives and personal experiences. The book includes major sections on World War One (including chapters on shell shock and plastic surgery), World War Two (including a chapter on the Nazi death camps), the Vietnam War (including chapters on Agent Orange and sexually transmitted diseases), together with chapters on the Korean War and the current conflict in Afghanistan. In addition, the book includes several personal stories in which veterans describe their experiences of injury and recovery. War Wounds is a truly unique book, which offers considerable insights into an aspect of war that is often mentioned but seldom examined as it is here. Medical professionals, military personnel and the general public will all find it a remarkably revealing read.

Wounds of War

Wounds of War PDF Author: Suzanne Gordon
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501730843
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 465

Book Description
U.S. military conflicts abroad have left nine million Americans dependent on the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) for medical care. Their "wounds of war" are treated by the largest hospital system in the country—one that has come under fire from critics in the White House, on Capitol Hill, and in the nation's media. In Wounds of War, Suzanne Gordon draws on five years of observational research to describe how the VHA does a better job than private sector institutions offering primary and geriatric care, mental health and home care services, and support for patients nearing the end of life. In the unusual culture of solidarity between patients and providers that the VHA has fostered, Gordon finds a working model for higher-quality health care and a much-needed alternative to the practice of for-profit medicine.

Book Description
Firearms injuries are considered to be a privilege of treatment by military surgeons. It is difficult to find one book that includes all of the knowledge about injuries of the locomotor system caused by firearms, and the treatments of these injuries. This book presents the author's experience in treating more than 5,000 wounded people in the last war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Authentic images of injuries by firearms and the results of treatment are provided for better understanding of the wounds. The key to success in the treatment of these injuries is the primary surgical treatment of wounds. This includes "sterilizing wounds", stabilizing of broken bone with or without bone defect, treatment of nerves, and blood vessels and open joints. As a measure for stabilization of open fractures, an external fixator was used for over 85% in the war in former Yugoslavia. The Author presents in detail his vast experience in treatment of open fractures, peace or war trauma of skin, fat, muscle, bone and open joints. He uses a clear indication of treatment in order to reach complete recovery, or a lesser degree of invalidity. He gives a detailed presentation of when and which methods of treatments should be used to treat bone defects, osteomyelitis, delayed healing, pseudoarthrosis and open joints. The Author shows that he achieves a positive clinical outcome, shorter hospital stay and reduced treatment by using these techniques and methods. This book provides instructions on how to treat the most complex open fractures of the locomotor system as to prevent complications and speed up rehabilitation, which is the most valuable to surgeons and should be available in every hospital, at any time, especially when we have in mind the global fight against terrorism.
