Prove It with Figures

Prove It with Figures PDF Author: Hans Zeisel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780387948928
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 382

Book Description
"Prove It With Figures" displays some of the tools of the social and statistical sciences that have been applied to the proof of facts in the courtroom and to the study of questions of legal importance. It explains how researchers can extract the most valuable and reliable data that can conveniently be made available, and how these efforts sometimes go awry. In the tradition of Zeisel's "Say It with Figures," a standard in the field of social statistics since 1947, it clarifies, in non-technical language, some of the basic problems common to all efforts to discern cause-and-effect relationships. Designed as a textbook for law students who seek an appreciation of the power and limits of empirical methods, the work also is a useful reference for lawyers, policymakers, and members of the public who would like to improve their critical understanding of the statistics presented to them. The many case histories include analyses of the death penalty, jury selection, employment discrimination, mass torts, and DNA profiling. Hans Zeisel was Professor of Law and Sociology Emeritus at the University of Chicago, where he pioneered the application of social science to the law. Earlier, he had a distinguished career in public opinion and market research. He has written on a wide variety of topics, ranging from research methodology and history to law enforcement, juries, and Sheakespeare. He was elected Fellow of the American Statistical Assoication and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and in 1980 he was inducted into the Market Research Hall of Fame. David Kaye is Regents Professor at the Arizona State University, where he teaches evidence and related topics. An author of several law textbooks and treatises, his work also has appeared in journals of

The Bieberbach Conjecture

The Bieberbach Conjecture PDF Author: Sheng Gong
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821827421
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
In 1919, Bieberbach posed a seemingly simple conjecture. That ``simple'' conjecture challenged mathematicians in complex analysis for the following 68 years! In that time, a huge number of papers discussing the conjecture and its related problems were inspired. Finally in 1984, de Branges completed the solution. In 1989, Professor Gong wrote and published a short book in Chinese, The Bieberbach Conjecture, outlining the history of the related problems and de Branges' proof. The present volume is the English translation of that Chinese edition with modifications by the author. In particular, he includes results related to several complex variables. Open problems and a large number of new mathematical results motivated by the Bieberbach conjecture are included. Completion of a standard one-year graduate complex analysis course will prepare the reader for understanding the book. It would make a nice supplementary text for a topics course at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level.

The Pleasures of Statistics

The Pleasures of Statistics PDF Author: Frederick Mosteller
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387779566
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 343

Book Description
From his unique perspective, renowned statistician and educator Frederick Mosteller describes many of the projects and events in his long career. From humble beginnings in western Pennsylvania to becoming the founding chairman of Harvard University’s Department of Statistics and beyond, he inspired many statisticians, scientists, and students with his unabashed pragmatism, creative thinking, and zest for both learning and teaching. This candid account offers fresh insights into the qualities that made Mosteller a superb teacher, a prolific scholar, a respected leader, and a valued advisor. A special feature of the book is its chapter-length insider accounts of work on the pre-election polls of 1948, statistical aspects of the Kinsey report on sexual behavior in the human male, mathematical learning theory, authorship of the disputed Federalist papers, safety of anesthetics, and a wide-ranging examination of the Coleman report on equality of educational opportunity. This volume is a companion to Selected Papers of Frederick Mosteller (Springer, 2006) and A Statistical Model: Frederick Mosteller’s Contributions to Statistics, Science, and Public Policy (Springer-Verlag, 1990). Frederick Mosteller (1916–2006) was Roger I. Lee Professor of Mathematical Statistics at Harvard University. His manuscript was unfinished at his death and has been updated.

Concise Calculus

Concise Calculus PDF Author: Sheng Gong
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
ISBN: 9813222638
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 691

Book Description
Mathematics is the fundamental knowledge for every scientist. As an academic at the University of Science and Technology of China, Professor Sheng Gong takes his passion for mathematics teaching even further. Besides imparting knowledge to students from the Department of Mathematics, he has created and developed his method of teaching Calculus to help students from physics, engineering and other sciences disciplines understand Calculus faster and deeper in order to meet the needs of applications in their own fields. This book is based on Professor Sheng Gong's 42 years of teaching experience along with a touch of applications of Calculus in other fields such as computer science, engineering. Science students will benefit from the unique way of illustrating theorems in Calculus and also perceive Calculus as a whole instead of a combination of separate topics. The practical examples provided in the book bring motivation to students to learn Calculus.

Foundations of Relative Homological Algebra

Foundations of Relative Homological Algebra PDF Author: Samuel Eilenberg
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821812556
Category : Algebra, Homological
Languages : en
Pages : 43

Book Description
The main notion of this paper is that of a "projective class of sequences" in an arbitrary (pointed) category. Each such class carries with it its own projective objects. One can then talk about projective resolutions, and if the category is additive, all the usual properties of the resolutions hold. In particular, this will permit the development of homological algebra in some additive categories which are not abelian, e.g., the category of comodules over a coalgebra over an arbitrary commutative ring.
