Book Description
Exegesis from the year 2015 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, grade: Respectively: A, A, B, B, Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, course: Hebrew Narrative, Hebrew Poetry, Minor Prophets, language: English, abstract: BOAZ’S ENCOUNTER WITH THE KINSMAN-REDEEMER: AN EXEGESIS OF RUTH 4:1-6 It is clear to any reader of the book of Ruth that Boaz and Ruth had fallen in love with each other before Boaz works out the redemption plan for Naomi. As a rich and strong man, Boaz would abusively use his influence to marry Ruth illegally, without observing the Law and the traditions of his people. However, as it is demonstrated in the first paper in this book, Boaz faithfully, though skillfully and tactfully, pursued the legal processes in marrying Ruth. In this, Boaz and Ruth set an example to follow for believers seeking marriage. THE JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS: AN EXEGESIS OF JOEL 3:1-3 Any reader of the prophet Joel quickly understands that chapter three is a prediction of the judgment of the nations. However, some questions seem not clearly answered in the chapter and those which are answered seem unsatisfied. Such questions will include the when, the who, the where and the when of the judgment. In the second paper of this book, I show that the main exegetical role of 3:1-3 is to present only skeletal answers to these questions before expanding them in the rest of the chapter. ISRAEL’S FAKE REPENTANCE: AN EXEGESIS OF HOSEA 6:1-3 Hosea 6:1-3 has been interpreted variously by exegetes. While some view it to record the Hosea’s call of the people to repentance, others see it as portraying the prophet’s prayer to the Lord on the behalf of the people. Still, another group view it as a lament of the people before the Lord, that is, the people’s repentance. However, in the third paper in book, I expose the pericope as portraying instead God’s people’s fake repentance, thus advocating for the views of some other scholars. THE ULTIMATE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE WICKED: AN EXEGESIS OF MALACHI 3:19-20 After God has rebuked his people for various sins in Malachi 1–3, chapter 4 shows the future retributions of both the wicked and the righteous. In 4:1-3 (3:19-21 in the Hebrew Bible), God speaks of these retributions as the ultimate difference between the wicked and the righteous. In the fourth paper of this book, I seek to understand what this ultimate difference is all about, before drawing subsequent conclusions and recommendations.

Biblical Text and Exegetical Culture

Biblical Text and Exegetical Culture PDF Author: Michael Fishbane
Publisher: Mohr Siebeck
ISBN: 3161520491
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 632

Book Description
In this wide-ranging collection, Michael Fishbane investigates the complex and diverse relationships between the 'biblical text' and 'exegetical culture.' The author demonstrates the multiple literary dimensions and interpretative strategies that came to form the Hebrew Bible in the context of the ancient Near East, the Dead Sea Scrolls in the context of an emergent biblical-Jewish culture, and the classical rabbinic Midrash in the context of an emergent rabbinic civilization in late antiquity. Within each study, and in the collection as a whole, the author shows a broad range of creative methods, always with a scholarly concern to illuminate the religious ideas of Scripture as it was perceived through diverse hermeneutical lenses and exegetical methodologies. The studies range from the purely literary to the highly analytic, from myth to law, and from studies of symbols to the study of exegetical methods.

The image is a tremendous one, --viz., that of a fire so intense and dreadful as not only to consume all that is on the surface of the ground, but to burn deep down into the under-world. 1 Sam. ii. 6, The Lord killeth and maketh alive; he bringeth down to She6l and bringeth up; i.e. he bringeth down to the grave or region of the dead, and bringeth or raiseth up from the same. That such is the meaning of this passage, seems plain from the first part of the verse, in which it is said, The Lord killeth and maketh alive: the equivalent of which is, the Lord bringeth down to She6l, and raiseth up from it. If by She6l here hell (in its appropriate sense) is meant, then how shall the last clause be construed, --viz., The Lord bringeth up from Sheol? Is it then a Scripture doctrine that the Lord brings up from the "eternal pit" those who are once confined there? Or rather, do not the Scriptures teach that "the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever"? 2 Sam. xxii. 6, the snares of She6l encompassed me; the deadly nets came upon me. Our English version renders thus: " The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me," i.e. came before me, for this is the sense in which the word prevent is employed, in our version, and not in the sense of hinder, which would here misrepresent the Hebrew. This version evidently sacrifices the parallelism of the original Hebrew, in which the snares of Sheol and the nets or snares of death are equivalents. It seems to sacrifice propriety also; for in what tolerable sense could David say that the sorrows of hell (in our present sense of this word) encompassed him? But when, in describing a scene of the...

An Exposition of Galatians, Third Edition

An Exposition of Galatians, Third Edition PDF Author: Don Garlington
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 172524411X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 452

Book Description
The present commentary seeks to be a kind of halfway house between highly technical and popular treatments of Galatians. Its purpose is to make the exposition as user-friendly as possible with only as many technicalities as necessary to accomplish that end. The emphasis of the work is decidedly theological, with attention focused on the salvation historical argument of Paul's letter. Its main target audience includes pastors, students, and Pauline scholars. The exposition assumes a modified form of the "New Perspective" on Paul and Second Temple Judaism as its framework of interpretation, and for this reason a premium has been placed on the letter's historical context as attested by the literature of Second Temple Judaism as well as the Greco-Roman environment. However, far from being inimical to the foundational concerns of the Reformation, this reading of the Galatian letter is fully supportive of the great mottoes of the Reformers themselves: Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, and especially Solus Christus, and all the more as the present work endeavors to honor an oft-neglected slogan of the Reformation, Ad Fontes (to the sources). The previous subtitle, A New Perspective/Reformational Reading, has now been changed to A Reading from the New Perspective in order to underscore the author's appreciation of what has been learned from such scholars as J. D. G. Dunn, N. T. Wright, and numerous others.
