Excavations at El-Ashmunein PDF Author: A. Jeffrey Spencer
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780714109602
Category : History

Pages : 77

Book Description
This volume contains an account of the excavation of settlement and cemetery areas at El-Ashmunein during the second stage of the British Museum project at the site. The results of the excavation constitute a significant addition to the archaeology of the ancient city and indicate that the potential for new discoveries at the site is far from being exhausted. Spencer describes the two major areas of interest revealed by excavations: a settlement of the Third Intermediate Period and a walled cemetery dating to c.2000 BC. In addition to a description of the archaeology, this volume also includes a complete catalogue of the objects discovered, including a large collection of pottery.

Book Description
From 1980 to 1990, the British Museum Expedition to the Middle Egypt conducted excavations at el-Ashmunein, the ancient mound of Hermopolis Magna. Known in Graeco-Roman times as the great city of Hermes, the site has since been published in several volumes covering various aspects of the material remains. This volume catalogues the excavated property, both fine and coarsewares, as well as lamps and glass which come mostly from the main Thoth Temple area and date from Late Roman, Umayyad and Abbasid periods.
