The literature on international students from Africa, and particularly Kenya, is very limited despite the significant number of Kenyan international students attending colleges and universities in the United States. Therefore, the intent of this study was to examine the adjustment problems of Kenyan international students in the United States. The study employed acculturation theory as its theoretical framework because acculturation entails the adaptation process of individuals to a new environment. The current study utilized a quantitative approach to examine their adjustment issues. The Michigan International Students Problem Inventory (MISPI), the research instrument for this study, was used to examine the extent to which the independent variables (a) gender, (b) age, (c) marital status, (d) type of high school attended in Kenya, (e) home located in an urban or rural community, (f) enrollment status at university (graduate or undergraduate), and (g) form of tuition payment (self pay, institution, U.S. government, government of Kenya, or employer) influence Kenyan international students' adjustment to higher education in the United States. -- AbstInitially, the study employed purposive sampling to identify potential participants who are Kenyan international students attending various colleges and universities in the United States. From this initial group of participants, the sample was expanded using the non-probability sampling method of snowballing. Snowballing relies on the identification of new participants from individuals who were identified through purposive sampling and agreed to participate in the study. This process resulted in the identification of 300 potential participants. Electronic contact of these individuals yielded 158 participants for a response rate of 53%. The major adjustment problem areas for Kenyan international students were financial aid, and living and dining, while they were least bothered by religion and personal issues. Therefore, it is important that these problems be resolved in a timely manner to enable the students adjust quickly to their new environment. -- Absract.

With the globalization of education, an increasing number of foreign students are enrolling in U.S. colleges and universities (Open Doors, 2013). These international students encounter a myriad of challenges as they adjust to student life in the US (Mokua, 2012). By examining the challenges face by international students, researchers hope to find ways to improve the student experience. While many specific student groups have been studied, prior to the present study, there has been limited research focused on the experiences of international students from Kenya studying in the US (Mutai, 2007). The present qualitative study explored the lived experiences of Kenyan students enrolled in community colleges in the state of Georgia to determine what challenges these students face and what academic, social, and psychological adjustments they make in response to those challenges. The researcher interviewed 10 Kenyan immigrant students and analyzed the data from those interviews. The research demonstrated that Kenyan immigrant students face challenges related to culture shock; language barriers; the need to balance family, school, and work life; the high cost of living, insufficient support systems, and negative emotions associated with their transition from Kenya to the US. The research also demonstrated that these students develop a number of coping strategies including aligning their cultural expectations, mediating language barriers, working while in school, seeking additional financial and social resources, establishing new support systems, and working to integrate into their local communities. Based on the findings, it is clear that more can and should be done to ease the transitions for foreign students.

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of international students attending a predominantly black urban university and a predominantly white urban university toward the adjustment problems that they experience in their universities. Also, the study was designed to determine the significant differences between the academic success of international students attending a predominantly black urban university and of those attending a predominantly white urban university. The population consisted of 3,079 international students enrolled at Texas Southern University and The University of Houston during the summer session of 1986. A sample size of 621 students was randomly selected from the population of international students. From the problems stated, eight null hypotheses were stated and tested. To analyze the data, the researcher utilized the t-test to determine whether there was a significant difference between the mean academic success (GPA) of international students attending a predominantly black urban university and of those attending a predominantly white urban university. The.05 level of significance was preestablished as a criterion of statistical significance. The findings of study were: There was no significant difference between the academic success of international students attending Texas Southern University and of those attending the University of Houston as affected by sex or age. However, there was a significant difference between the academic success of graduate subjects attending Texas Southern and of those attending The University of Houston with regard to their academic status. Five recommendations were made for future studies: Future studies should be conducted on similar groups of students to obtain future evidence of the effects of various variables on academic success (GPA). Further studies should be conducted to ascertain the influence of the academic environment on the academic success of international students. Future studies should be conducted in rural institutions of higher learning with fairly large enrollment of international students. There should be continuing studies regarding international students' adjustment problems and the most effective ways for university authorities to deal with them. Further studies should be conducted to deal with the problems of international students in making friends and socially interacting with members of their University.
