"This study examined self-reported negative conflict, mindfulness, physical affection, sexual intimacy, and emotional support as potential moderators of the links between attachment and relationship quality over time in a sample of 1501 individuals in relationships and a sample of 184 couples. All of the data were collected through online surveys and respondents were e-mailed follow up surveys every 3 months for a year and a half. The results suggested that key processes may interact differentially with attachment anxiety and avoidance. Specifically, when predicting relationship satisfaction, negative conflict moderated the effect of attachment avoidance such that high negative conflict and high attachment avoidance were associated with particularly low current satisfaction across studies. Physical affection and sexual intimacy were also both found to buffer the negative relationship between current relationship satisfaction and attachment avoidance. In contrast, attachment anxiety was found to be buffered by more internal processes. Specifically, the non-judging and observing dimensions of mindfulness were found to buffer the negative association between attachment anxiety and relationship functioning. "Research has shown that approaching intimate relationships with feelings of insecurity can constrain the perception and memory of interpersonal experiences (Dykas & Cassidy, 2011). Attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969/1982, 1980) put forth that this happens because insecure individuals navigate their relationships guided by memories of previous relational difficulties, which can lead to more defensive and limiting thinking processes. This thesis examined this proposition more closely, and argued that interpersonal memory processing will be limited especially if insecure people tacitly presume that their relational history mirror what they can therefore expect in relationships. Specifically, the present research examined the general hypothesis that this limited memory processing will be observable especially in people believing that relational difficulties are fixed (as opposed to improvable) - that is, in people believing weakly in relational growth. This prediction was tested in 3 studies. In a pattern similar but not mapping exactly onto this prediction, Study 1 found that higher attachment insecurity (anxiety) was unrelated to the subjective recall of common childhood events under lower relational growth beliefs, while it predicted better recall under higher relational growth beliefs. Higher attachment insecurity (avoidance) predicted poorer recall, but unexpectedly this effect was especially observable among participants holding stronger growth beliefs. To clarify this pattern of results, Study 2 used an experimental manipulation of relational growth beliefs. Specifically, participants were led to believe either more or less strongly in relational growth, before completing a recall task asking about specific material contained in an audio interview of a stranger describing childhood attachment-laden memories. Consistent with my predictions, results indicated that attachment insecurity (anxiety) predicted lower scores on this objective recall task, especially in participants led to construe relational difficulties as fixed (low relational growth beliefs condition) - compared with those led to construe them as improvable (high relational growth beliefs condition). In Study 3, participants were asked to recall positive and negative early attachment interactions with their parents, and to make causal attributions about those events (i.e., to evaluate how much the cause of those interactions was descriptive of their parents [internality], was likely to change [stability], and was representative of their relationship with them [globality]). Results revealed that stronger attachment insecurity (avoidance) predicted worse subjective recall - which was especially true for positive interactions and among participants concomitantly higher in attachment anxiety - and this effect was once again moderated by higher relational growth beliefs. Furthermore, mediation analyses suggested that this link was explained by the tendency to ascribe these positive attachment experiences to global causes. The present findings collectively support the notion that beliefs in relational growth and attachment orientations are conceptually independent, and generally suggest that relational growth beliefs may help individuals with insecure attachment (especially when involving attachment anxiety) to process interpersonal information more fully. Those findings and their limitations are discussed, and some of their theoretical and research implications are considered within a social-cognitive framework." --
