Book Description
I'm running late and being late for this appointment could mean ending up as a Common. I breathe a sigh of relief when I spot the tall hospital building and head toward it for my evaluation. I follow the older, brunette nurse into the examination room. The floor squeaks under my feet, and I am greeted with the pungent odor of antiseptics. "Take off your clothes. All of them. Take a seat on the exam table," the nurse instructs with a tight smile. "Mara, you must obey without question." While I wait for the doctor, my attention is drawn to the tray of strange tools that is sitting next to me. I'm uneasy about what they might do. My heart is pounding in my chest, and I try to look at anything but those tools while I wait. I hear a click at the door behind me. I turn my head to see 5 men all in white coats entering. I'm shocked at the sight of so many male doctors. One of the older doctors takes the seat between my thighs, and the other men stand behind him and peer intently over his shoulder. I shiver with humiliation, but I clench my jaw, reminding myself that I have to obey. Compliance with what comes next, despite being dreadful and humiliating, is necessary to increase my chances of being chosen as Prime and paired with a male. According to Dominion law, this stranger will control my fate for the rest of my life and can do with me whatever he wants.

Farewell My Friend

Farewell My Friend PDF Author: Rabindranath Tagore
Publisher: Jaico Publishing House
ISBN: 8184951647
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 183

Book Description
The original Bengali novel Shesher Kavita (lit. Last Poem) was published in 1929. The author draws an amusing picture of an ultra-modern Bengali intellectual whose Oxford education, while giving him a superiority complex, has induced in him a craze for conscious originality which results in a deliberate and frivolous contrariness to all accepted opinion and convention. His aggressive self-complacence, however, receives a shock when as the result of an accidental meeting he falls in love with, and wins in return the heart of, a quite different product of modern culture – a highly educated girl of fine sensibility and deep feelings. This love being more or less genuine and different from his previous experience of coquetry, releases his own submerged depth of sincerity, which he finds hard to adjust to the habits of sophistry and pose, practised so long. In the process he manages to strike a new romantic attitude. The struggle makes of him a curiously pathetic figure – one who is being worked against his grain. The tragedy is understood by the girl, who releases him from his troth and disappears from his life. The last poem which she addresses to her lover gives evidence of the depth of feeling of which she was capable.

Passion, Humiliation, Revenge

Passion, Humiliation, Revenge PDF Author: Lapidus
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 0739129988
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 183

Book Description
This book reveals the phenomenon in Russian prose in which a male protagonist finds himself perpetuating a cycle of passion, humiliation, and revenge within his relationships with women. By examining the mental and emotional state of the male protagonistwho finds himself in a sexual situation, Rina Lapidus explores how his passion for a woman leads the man into an encounter that causes him humiliation and ends up eliciting a powerful desire on his part to punish the woman who initially arouses his eroticfeeling. The male protagonist directs his fury at the woman, seeking vengeance because of the shame he has suffered. Lapidus shows how the man sees himself as a highly spiritual being and finds it difficult to comes to terms with his sexual nature. Theauthor argues that this denial of desire leads the man to take out his frustration with himself on the woman, projecting all of his faults and guilt onto her. When the woman brings the male protagonist low, his thirst for revenge becomes a powerful driving force in his life that eventually brings about his downfall. This book will be of interest to those studying in the areas of Russian literature, psychology, and gender studies.

Mrs. Robinson's Disgrace

Mrs. Robinson's Disgrace PDF Author: Kate Summerscale
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0802743684
Category : History

Pages : 331

Book Description
"I think people marry far too much; it is such a lottery, and for a poor woman--bodily and morally the husband's slave--a very doubtful happiness." -Queen Victoria to her recently married daughter Vicky Headstrong, high-spirited, and already widowed, Isabella Walker became Mrs. Henry Robinson at age 31 in 1844. Her first husband had died suddenly, leaving his estate to a son from a previous marriage, so she inherited nothing. A successful civil engineer, Henry moved them, by then with two sons, to Edinburgh's elegant society in 1850. But Henry traveled often and was cold and remote when home, leaving Isabella to her fantasies. No doubt thousands of Victorian women faced the same circumstances, but Isabella chose to record her innermost thoughts-and especially her infatuation with a married Dr. Edward Lane-in her diary. Over five years the entries mounted-passionate, sensual, suggestive. One fateful day in 1858 Henry chanced on the diary and, broaching its privacy, read Isabella's intimate entries. Aghast at his wife's perceived infidelity, Henry petitioned for divorce on the grounds of adultery. Until that year, divorce had been illegal in England, the marital bond being a cornerstone of English life. Their trial would be a cause celebre, threatening the foundations of Victorian society with the specter of "a new and disturbing figure: a middle class wife who was restless, unhappy, avid for arousal." Her diary, read in court, was as explosive as Flaubert's Madame Bovary, just published in France but considered too scandalous to be translated into English until the 1880s. As she accomplished in her award-winning and bestselling The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher, Kate Summerscale brilliantly recreates the Victorian world, chronicling in exquisite and compelling detail the life of Isabella Robinson, wherein the longings of a frustrated wife collided with a society clinging to rigid ideas about sanity, the boundaries of privacy, the institution of marriage, and female sexuality.
