Book Description
Since its inception, the International Research Group on Colour Vision Deficiencies (IRGCVD) has followed the policy that the Symposium Pro ceedings should be as close as possible to a complete record of the scientific content of the meeting. This policy has the advantage of providing an accurate picture of the current state of the art in research on color vision deficiencies, but it also has the disadvantage that papers typically span a wide range of quality. In this volume, however, we have instituted a system of peer review in an effort to enhance scientific quality as much as possible while continuing our past policy of publishing all submitted manuscripts. In addition to being edited for English composition and grammar, each of the papers included here has been carefully reviewed by an IRGCVD member selected for his or her expertise in the specific topic of the paper. Reviewers were instructed to include in their comments suggestions for improvement rather than recom or rejection. In our opinion, this review process mendations for publication has resulted in substantial improvement of many of the articles and has enhanced the value of the publication. We are pleased to acknowledge the efforts of our reviewers and offer them our sincere thanks for their important contributions to Colour Vision Deficiencies X. The Editors B. Drum, J. D. Moreland & A. Serra (eds. ), Colour Vision Deficiencies X, p. xiii.

The Mystery of Yawning in Physiology and Disease

The Mystery of Yawning in Physiology and Disease PDF Author: Olivier Walusinski
Publisher: Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
ISBN: 3805594046
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
Yawning is a stereotyped phylogenetically ancient phenomenon that occurs in almost all vertebrates. As an emotional behavior and an expressive movement, yawning has many consequences; nevertheless, it has so far been poorly addressed in medical research and practice. Bringing together the latest research from many fields, this volume integrates current insights within embryology, ethology, neurophysiology, psychology, fMRI and pathology. The phylogenetic and ontogenetic aspects of yawning offer an interesting perspective on human development, and its occurrence in neurological diseases - an area explored by only a few investigators - may provide useful clinical information. This book will make valuable and fascinating reading to neurologists, sleep specialists, psychologists, ethologists and pharmacologists, as well as to anybody interested in uncovering the mystery of yawning.

Book Description
This classic textbook sets out clearly and concisely how to evaluate symptoms and elicit relevant physical signs. It describes the practical skills which every clinician must acquire and develop in order to evolve diagnostic procedures and management strategies and plans. ‘Highly Commended’ in the 2006 and 2010 BMA Medical Book Competitions, this Thirteenth Edition contains over 500 clinical photographs and diagrams to illustrate the text, with new topics added to make the book even more comprehensive. Included on the Student Consult site are the specially-recorded videos demonstrating many of the clinical examination routines described in the main text. The book starts with a general overview section on history taking and the general examination that provide the framework on which to hang the detail. The systematic examination section documents clearly the relevant history, examination and special investigations as well as giving advice on their significance. The third section covers examination in specific situations and emphasises an integrated and structured approach to these patients. A final section spells out how to demonstrate the techniques learned in the book in an OSCE. Macleod’s is closely linked to its sister publication, Davidson’s Principles & Practice of Medicine, which complements the information in this text. Available with full online access on Student Consult and ancillary videos demonstrating key clinical examination routines following the format laid out in the book. There are two new chapters on examination in specific situations: The frail elderly The febrile adult A new section explicitly spells out how to demonstrate the techniques learned in the book in an OSCE and other formative and summative examinations.
