By means of a Beltrami transformation of the coordinates to new variable, the system of the gas-dynamic equation and the equation for irrotation becomes a Cauchy-Riemann system. Solutions of the Cauchy-Riemann system for the velocity functions as well as of the Beltrami system for the coordinates are given and can be superimposed due to the linearity of the systems. Thus, a number of so far known transonic flows and a number of new ones can be represented in a simple manner.

Mathematical methods of investigating one-dimensional problems in gas dynamics are presented. Systems of quasilinear equations and principal problems for hyperbolic systems are studied in detail. Equations of gas dynamics are derived and investigated; analytic solutions of gas dynamics are presented; discontinuous flows containing shock waves are studied. The fundamentals of the theory of difference schemes are set forth and a variety of numerical solution methods for gas dynamics problems employed in practical calculations are set forth.
