Surgical Ethics

Surgical Ethics PDF Author: Laurence B. McCullough
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199748799
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 417

Book Description
The first textbook on the subject, this is a practical, clinically comprehensive guide to ethical issues in surgical practice, research, and education written by some of the most prominent figures in the fields of surgery and bioethics. Discussions of informed consent, confidentiality, and advance directives--core concepts integral to every surgeon-patient relationship--open the volume. Seven chapters tackle the ethical issues in surgical practice, covering the full range of surgical patients--from emergency, acute, high-risk, and elective patients, to poor surgical risk and dying patients. The book even considers the special relationship between the surgeon and patients who are family members or friends. Chapters on surgical research and education address innovation, self-regulation in practice and research, and the prevention of unwarranted bias. Two chapters focus on the multidisciplinary nature of surgery, including the relationships between surgery and other medical specialties and the obligations of the surgeon to other members of the surgical team. The economic dimensions of surgery, especially within managed care, are addressed in chapters on the surgeons financial relationships with patients, conflicts of interest, and relationships with payers and institutions. The authors do not engage in abstract discussions of ethical theory; instead, their discussions are always directly relevant to the everyday concerns of practicing surgeons. This well-integrated volume is intended for practicing surgeons, medical educators, surgical residents, bioethicists, and medical students.

What Former Patients Don't Even Know About Plastic Surgery

What Former Patients Don't Even Know About Plastic Surgery PDF Author: Serge Uri
Publisher: Hyperink Inc
ISBN: 1614648182

Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
ABOUT THE BOOK Plastic surgery is often viewed as a miraculous solution to physical imperfections or signs of aging. Although it may certainly address many issues related to one's physical appearance, few people have a realistic approach when it comes to plastic surgery. People who have excessively high aesthetic expectations look to plastic surgery as a means to achieving those unnatural expectations. The truth is that plastic surgery has its benefits and risks just like any other type of surgery, and while it is a great way to enhance one's physical appearance, potential patients need to know more about its nuts and bolts before making their final decision. It is important to obtain realistic, accurate information, and learn the advantages and possible problems that are associated with various types of plastic surgery. Contrary to popular belief, plastic surgery is not only about enhancing physical appearance. Initially, plastic surgery was created as a surgical specialty that involved reconstruction and recovery after traumas, burns, birth defects or other types of unfortunate accidents that resulted in body disfigurement and altered physical appearance that significantly impaired a person's quality of life. Over the years, plastic surgery has gained popularity as a cosmetic tool and a method to correct percieved imperfections. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK During a facelift, a plastic surgeon will typically make an incision behind the ear in the hairline region of the scalp, which makes it less exposed and visible. Then, the plastic surgeon will proceed by pulling the skin and assessing how much skin should be removed for a smoother and tighter face. The excess skin is removed, and then the surgeon carefully re-positions the remaining skin back in place. Sutures and bandages are applied to complete the facelift. There are various techniques, some of which are less invasive and can yield satisfactory results. For example, a mini facelift involves pulling and re-positioning the skin in a smaller region of the face using special thin threads that are inserted in the deeper layers of the skin. Some patients are ineligible to undergo a facelift due to certain health conditions or prescription medications. This is why it is important to talk about your medical history with your plastic surgeon, who will determine whether a facelift is the proper course of action in your case. Wrinkles can also be treated through less invasive, non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as Botox injections, laser skin resurfacing and dermal fillers. Some patients may opt for these conservative treatment alternatives because there is a lower chance of side effects and complications compared to a traditional facelift... Buy a copy to keep reading! Patient Safety in Plastic Surgery

Patient Safety in Plastic Surgery PDF Author: Richard Botney
Publisher: Thieme
ISBN: 162623938X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 781

Book Description
Patient safety is an overriding concern in all surgery and particularly in plastic surgery, where many of the procedures are elective, but information about patient safety has traditionally been scattered throughout the literature. Patient Safety in Plastic Surgery covers all of the essential patient safety topics in one valuable resource. Timely and practical, the book places special emphasis on clinical issues. It begins with the safety concerns most often identified by plastic surgeons, such as DVTs, surgical site infections, sleep apnea, and anesthesia safety. Beyond these obvious problems are major safety issues that often fall off the radar. These are critical to patient comfort and safety, but they do not always receive the attention they merit, such as hypothermia, nausea and vomiting, proper patient positioning, and screening and management of medical co-morbidities. Other important chapters focus on the identification and avoidance of patients who are poor psychological candidates for surgery and the legal aspects of safety. The book is edited by V. Leroy Young, a well-known plastic surgeon, and Richard Botney, a noted anesthesiologist. They offer readers the advantage of their combined experience along with that of a multidisciplinary group of experts on the different topics covered.
