Evaluation of Truck and Agricultural Vehicle Behavior at Reduced Conflict Intersections

Evaluation of Truck and Agricultural Vehicle Behavior at Reduced Conflict Intersections PDF Author:

Book Description
In the US, some states have begun to address rural high-speed intersection crashes by physically restricting minor-road crossing movements (left and through turns) to simplify driver decision-making in terms of gap acceptance (the extent to which drivers will be able to utilize a gap in traffic of a particular size or duration). These treatments are referred to in Minnesota as reduced conflict intersections (RCIs). Within Minnesota’s rural corridors, introduction of RCI design has been successful in preventing severe crashes; however, the unusual design has been met with some apprehension from operators of agricultural equipment and large trucks. This, in combination with a resistance to the unfamiliar, has created a desire for more information regarding RCI configuration safety impacts for these types of vehicles. In response to these concerns, this study collected and evaluated large vehicle operational behavior at a set of RCIs and at similar standard control intersections in Minnesota. The researchers collected data in 2015 using a portable video trailer array and metrics on truck turning movements at three RCI intersections in Minnesota and three similar non-RCI intersections, which were proximate to the RCI intersections. The researchers compared travel time, evasive maneuvers, and other metrics for this study. The researchers found no evidence that validated concerns expressed about large vehicle operation at RCIs. Exposure time was not increased at U-turn locations and evasive maneuvers were lower than at control locations.

Roundabouts

Book Description
TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide - Second Edition explores the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of roundabouts. The report also addresses issues that may be useful in helping to explain the trade-offs associated with roundabouts. This report updates the U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, based on experience gained in the United States since that guide was published in 2000.

Advanced Technologies for Improving Large-truck Safety on Two-lane Secondary Roads

Advanced Technologies for Improving Large-truck Safety on Two-lane Secondary Roads PDF Author: Nicholas J. Garber
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Intelligent transportation systems
Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
The use of large trucks has steadily increased since the passage of the Surface Transportation Assistance Act to the point where they now account for over 50% of vehicle traffic on some highways in Virginia. Projections now forecast that large-truck travel will grow at twice the rate of personal vehicle travel in the near future. Although several studies have been conducted to determine the effects of large trucks on safety on multilane primary and interstate highway systems, the effects on two-lane secondary roads have been largely ignored. This study identified the causal factors and predominant types of large-truck crashes on two-lane secondary roads in Virginia and compared the large-truck crash rates for two-lane secondary roads and two-lane primary roads. The study also identified advanced technologies associated with intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that can be used to minimize the causal factors of large-truck crashes on these roads. The results showed that large-truck crash rates are significantly higher on two-lane secondary roads than on two-lane primary roads, with the predominant types of crashes being angle, rear end, sideswipe same direction, and sideswipe opposite direction. The study identified several ITS technologies that can be used to mitigate the predominant causal factors and recommends a pilot study to test the effectiveness of one such system.

Post Impact Trajectory of Vehicles at Rural Intersections

Post Impact Trajectory of Vehicles at Rural Intersections PDF Author: Sam Doecke
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781921645235
Category : Roads
Languages : en
Pages : 19

Book Description
This report describes the path of vehicles following a collision with another vehicle at a rural intersection. Detailed information from in-depth investigations of 70 intersection crashes was analysed. Rear end crashes at intersections were excluded as were collisions involving a motorcycle. Intersection geometry, speed zone, impact point and mass ratio influence the nature of the post impact trajectory of the vehicles involved. As the results show a high number of vehicles travel a large distance at a shallow angle following an intersection collision, extending crash barriers on the through road (the road with the right of way) right up to the intersection may have some benefit. Clear zones surrounding the intersection are also advisable and have an added benefit of increasing sight distance. Hazards can be assessed for removal or relocation by applying the results of this study. Keywords: Intersection, rural road, traffic accident.
