Also a rating form was completed by 70 preceptors to determine how the observed level of self-confidence compared to self-reported self-esteem at the end of the preceptorship program. As well, four preceptors and five preceptees completed weekly diaries and six preceptors and six preceptees participated in weekly phone interviews with the investigator. Overall, self-esteem went up after the preceptorship. A comparison was made between the pretest and posttest using the t-test (dependent paired samples). Significant difference (p=.05) was demonstrated. Self-confidence ratings by preceptors were inaccurate as they had no relation to the self-reported self-esteem level of students. The diaries and interviews of preceptors and preceptees were a rich source of data as well.

Engagement with peer review and self-assessment potentially influences the development of self-regulatory capability (Nicol, 2010; Sadler, 2010; Boud, 2007) and therefore could be beneficial to student nurses who at the point of professional registration are required to demonstrate this capability (Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), 2010). However, engagement with peer review is not always a positive experience for learners. A negative peer review experience can result in loss of confidence, decreased self-esteem and withdrawal from the learning process (Duers and Brown, 2009; Ecclestone and Pryor, 2003). The aim of this qualitative research study was to explore student nurses' (n=25) conceptions and implementation of peer review and self-assessment; an area that was identified as being under-researched (Rout and Roberts, 2007). Ethical approval was obtained. Adoption of a non-probability, purposive sampling technique permitted selection of participants undertaking a pre-registration nursing programme within a Higher Education institution. Data collection took place on 34 occasions, utilising focus group discussion, practical task and individual interview methods. Data analysis involved the application of six main concepts derived from the theories of the Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky, 1978) and Symbolic Interactionism (Blumer, 1969) to transcribed data. A potential limitation of concept-driven data analysis is its minimising effect on the emergence of new material directly from the data (Tappen, 2011), therefore Miles and Huberman (2004) 3 stage analysis model was also utilised. The study contributes empirical evidence of student nurses' conceptions and implementation of peer review and self-assessment. A new feedback form was created and used by participants during the study; a form created by student nurses for use by student nurses in the future. Recognition of the potential of peer review and self-assessment engagement to influence the development of self-regulatory capability was verbalised by participants during the study.

Purpose: Preceptors are relied upon to prepare nursing students during their capstone experience as novice, generalist nurses. There is currently no instrument that measures the preceptor’s level of preparedness. The purpose of this study was to psychometrically test a 67-item instrument, the Cap-ExPresS developed during a pilot study, which evaluated the level of self-perceived confidence preceptors reported when working with capstone students. Methods: The subject population was clinical nurses working as preceptors for senior-level nursing students during their capstone experience. The sample included 118 preceptors recruited from four hospitals in the Midwest. A cross-sectional multi-center survey design was used to test the instrument for internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was also performed to support construct validity and to reduce the number of items. Correlations and regressions between independent variables and Cap-ExPresS scores measuring preceptor preparedness were explored. This study tested a revised 67-item Cap-ExPresS with this larger more diverse sample, decreasing the scale to 22 items representing preceptor preparedness with subscales of Student-Centeredness, Pedagogic Competence, Clinical Competence, and Nurse Professionalism. Procedure: After IRB approval, hospital contacts forwarded email instructions with a survey link to all their clinical nurses. The survey screened for inclusion: registered nurses providing direct patient care who had precepted or planned to precept a capstone student. Data were collected securely using Research Electronic Data Capture. After EFA and item analyses, participants were invited to take the retest, evaluating test-retest reliability. Future Research: A valid and reliable Cap-ExPresS can be used to identify best practices to increase the preceptor’s self-perceived level of preparedness to precept capstone students. The scale can be used to assess the learning needs of preceptors, and to perform interventional studies, longitudinal studies, and randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of preceptor training and education on confidence to perform preceptor behaviors.

The reason for conducting this research project was the increasing rate of nurse turnover and job dissatisfaction at the staff nurse level. Today's professional nurse is overworked and over burdened with exceptionally difficult patient caseloads. Self esteem and self worth become low when job dissatisfaction is high. The goal of nursing administrators and nurse educators should be focused on retaining staff nurses and providing for high worker satisfaction. The purpose of this research study was to determine if participating in a student nurse preceptorship program increased the level of job satisfaction- experienced by the staff nurse. The Employee Assessment Tool is a thirty-five item quality of work analysis tool used to determine the importance of work factors and their relationship to job satisfaction. The tool was distributed to thirty nurses who were presently preceptors for student nurses, and thirty nurses who were not preceptors for students, and one hundred percent of the nurses responded and returned the questionnaire to this researcher. The hypothesis stated that nurses who work as student nurse preceptors have an enhanced sense of job satisfaction over nurses wh6 do not work as student nurses preceptors. This hypothesis was not found to be supported from the research data collected. A T-test was used to statistically analyze the data. Limitations of the study such as controlling for the number of times a nurse had worked as a preceptor, and that only one college program and hospital were used, may have lead to the unsupported results obtained. Recommendations for future research include using a larger sample population with greater control over how many times the nurse was a preceptor. More intensive research is needed in order to improve staff nurse retention and to increase the quality of the job satisfaction felt by the staff nurse.
