Evaluation of Methods for Calculating Soil Thermal Conductivity

Evaluation of Methods for Calculating Soil Thermal Conductivity PDF Author: Omar T. Farouki

Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
A detailed analysis of methods for calculating the thermal conductivity of soils is presented, and trends in the predictions of these methods are compared. The influence of changes in the moisture content on the calculated thermal conductivity of a soil (at constant dry density) is shown as is the sensitivity of this calculated value to changes in dry density or in the soil solids' thermal conductivity. The methods are evaluated to determine the extent of agreement of their predictions with measured values obtained on soils of known composition and properties. The deviations of the predicted values are determined for soils that are unfrozen or frozen, coarse or fine, unsaturated, saturated or dry. The applicability of each of the methods under various conditions is determined and recommendations are made as to the best method for each condition. (Author).

Thermal Properties of Soils

Thermal Properties of Soils PDF Author: Omar Farouki
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Frozen ground
Languages : en
Pages : 152

Book Description
This monograph describes the thermal properties of soils, unfrozen or frozen. The effects on these properties of water and its phase changes are detailed. An explanation is given of the interaction between moisture and heat transfer. Other influences on soil thermal properties are described, including such factors as soil composition, structure, additives, salts, organics, hysteresis and temprature. Techniques for testing soil thermal conductivity are outlined and the methods for calculating this property are described. The monograph gives the results of an evaluation of these methods whereby their predictions were compared with measured values, thus showing their applicability to various soil types and conditions.

Methods of Soil Analysis, Part 4

Methods of Soil Analysis, Part 4 PDF Author: Jacob H. Dane
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 089118841X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1744

Book Description
The best single reference for both the theory and practice of soil physical measurements, Methods, Part 4 adopts a more hierarchical approach to allow readers to easily find their specific topic or measurement of interest. As such it is divided into eight main chapters on soil sampling and statistics, the solid, solution, and gas phases, soil heat, solute transport, multi-fluid flow, and erosion. More than 100 world experts contribute detailed sections.

Soil Physics with Python

Soil Physics with Python PDF Author: Marco Bittelli
Publisher:
ISBN: 0199683093
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 461

Book Description
This innovative study presents concepts and problems in soil physics, and provides solutions using original computer programs. It provides a close examination of physical environments of soil, including an analysis of the movement of heat, water and gases. The authors employ the programminglanguage Python, which is now widely used for numerical problem solving in the sciences. In contrast to the majority of the literature on soil physics, this text focuses on solving, not deriving, differential equations for transport. Using numerical procedures to solve differential equations allowsthe solution of quite difficult problems with fairly simple mathematical tools. Numerical methods convert differential into algebraic equations, which can be solved using conventional methods of linear algebra. Each chapter introduces a soil physics concept, and proceeds to develop computer programsto solve the equations and illustrate the points made in the discussion.Problems at the end of each chapter help the reader practise using the concepts introduced. The text is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduates and researchers of soil physics. It employs an open source philosophy where computer code is presented, explained and discussed, and provides thereader with a full understanding of the solutions. Once mastered, the code can be adapted and expanded for the user's own models, fostering further developments. The Python tools provide a simple syntax, Object Oriented Programming techniques, powerful mathematical and numerical tools, and a userfriendly environment.
