The Theory of Propellers

The Theory of Propellers PDF Author: Theodore Theodorsen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
Summary: A technical method is given for calculating the axial interference velocity of a propeller. The method involves the use of certain weight functions P, Q, and F. Numerical values for the weight functions are given for two-blade, three-blade, and six-blade propellers.

Aircraft Fire Safety

Aircraft Fire Safety PDF Author: North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development. Propulsion and Energetics Panel. Symposium
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789283505297
Category : Aircraft accidents
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The Conference Proceedings contains 38 papers presented at the Propulsion and Energetics Panel 73rd Symposium on 'Aircraft Fire Safety' which was held 22 - 26 May 1989 in Sintra, Portugal. The Symposium was arranged in the following sessions: Review of Fire-Related Aircraft Accidents (3); Fire Safety Standards and Research Programmes (6); Aircraft Internal Fires (9); Aircraft External Fires (2); Fire Safety of Military Weapon Systems (3); Fire Hardening by Advanced Materials and Structural Design (8); Passenger Behaviour in Emergency Situations (3); and Passenger Protective Equipment (4). The Technical Evaluation Report and and Addendum are included at the beginning of the Proceedings. Questions and answers of the discussions follow each paper. The last AGARD review on the subject took place in a Specialists' Meeting in 1975, followed by a Working Group Report in 1979 and Lecture Series in 1982. The purpose of the Symposium was a review of the present state-of-the-art and of the last improvements. Although the safety standards in aviation are already very high, there is still room for improvements. They are listed in the Conclusions and Recommendations of the Technical Evaluation Report and in the Addendum.

Internal Flow

Internal Flow PDF Author: E. M. Greitzer
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139451111
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 739

Book Description
This book describes the analysis and behaviour of internal flows encountered in propulsion systems, fluid machinery (compressors, turbines and pumps) and ducts (diffusers, nozzles and combustion chambers). The focus is on phenomena that are important in setting the performance of a broad range of fluid devices. The authors show that even for complex processes one can learn a great deal about the behaviour of such devices from a clear understanding and rigorous use of basic principles. Throughout the book they illustrate theoretical principles by reference to technological applications. The strong emphasis on fundamentals, however, means that the ideas presented can be applied beyond internal flow to other types of fluid motion. The book equips students and practising engineers with a range of new analytical tools. These tools offer enhanced interpretation and application of both experimental measurements and the computational procedures that characterize modern fluids engineering.

Transonic Aerodynamics

Transonic Aerodynamics PDF Author: L. Pamela Cook
Publisher: SIAM
ISBN: 0898713102
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
This volume offers exciting results, perspectives, and case studies for the treatment of problems arising in transonic aerodynamics. New advances including triple deck theory, analysis of stagnation at the nose of a body, transonic choked flow, and the transonic area rule are presented. Interest in analyzing the transonic range of flight, its stability properties, and especially the question of designing reduced drag (shockless or weak shock) airfoils keeps growing. Present day commercial aircraft cruise in the transonic range. Mechanical and aeronautical engineers interested in compressible fluid flows, design of optimal wings, and an understanding of transonic flow held about wings and airfoils will find the book invaluable. This book is understandable to those with a knowledge of continuum mechanics (fluids) and asymptotic methods. It is appropriate for graduate courses in aerodynamics and mathematical methods.

Turbulence

Turbulence PDF Author: Uriel Frisch
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139935976
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
This textbook presents a modern account of turbulence, one of the greatest challenges in physics. The state-of-the-art is put into historical perspective five centuries after the first studies of Leonardo and half a century after the first attempt by A. N. Kolmogorov to predict the properties of flow at very high Reynolds numbers. Such 'fully developed turbulence' is ubiquitous in both cosmical and natural environments, in engineering applications and in everyday life. The intended readership for the book ranges from first-year graduate students in mathematics, physics, astrophysics, geosciences and engineering, to professional scientists and engineers. Elementary presentations of dynamical systems ideas, of probabilistic methods (including the theory of large deviations) and of fractal geometry make this a self-contained textbook.
