At this time the kings of Portugal and Castile agreed to set aside their own opposing claims to the archipelago and to help Luis in the enterprise to which the Pope had thus lent his support.' But Luis never entered into possession, and Portugal and Castile kept up the struggle for the islands. Papal bulls were issued, favorable now to one and now to the other party, and the question of ownership, which was argued before the Council of Basel in 1435, was not finally settled until 1479, when, by the treaty of Alcacovas, Portugal ceded the islands to Castile.' Book Description
Excerpt from European Treaties Bearing On The History Of The United States And Its Dependencies, Vol. 4: 1716-1815 Of this serres, intended to continue through the treaties of the year 1815, Miss Frances G. Davenport completed the manuscript for three volumes, published respectively in 1917 and, after her untimely death, in 1929 and 1934, and extending from the discovery of America through the year 1715. The present or fourth volume has been prepared by the undersigned on an abridged plan. Only a scholar having long and full acquaintance with the diplomatic history of Europe could prepare such learned introductions and bibliographies and annotations as those found in the preceding volumes of the series. Moreover there were also reasons of economy for abridging the original plan. On account of the omission of introductions and bibliographies I have occasionally included a provision because it was explanatory and not because it contained specific American materials. I have also occasionally in cluded slight non - American materials when little or no space would be gained by their omission. The text given is, in every case where it is possible, that which is set forth in the ratification, but the formulae of ratification which ordinarily precede and follow that text are, in this volume, omitted. All dates are of the new style, unless otherwise indicated. Only Russia used the Old style throughout the period 1716-1815. Great Britain used it until 17 52.
