Innovations in Federal Statistics

Innovations in Federal Statistics PDF Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 030945428X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 151

Book Description
Federal government statistics provide critical information to the country and serve a key role in a democracy. For decades, sample surveys with instruments carefully designed for particular data needs have been one of the primary methods for collecting data for federal statistics. However, the costs of conducting such surveys have been increasing while response rates have been declining, and many surveys are not able to fulfill growing demands for more timely information and for more detailed information at state and local levels. Innovations in Federal Statistics examines the opportunities and risks of using government administrative and private sector data sources to foster a paradigm shift in federal statistical programs that would combine diverse data sources in a secure manner to enhance federal statistics. This first publication of a two-part series discusses the challenges faced by the federal statistical system and the foundational elements needed for a new paradigm.

Numeric Data Services and Sources for the General Reference Librarian PDF Author: Lynda Kellam
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1780632592
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
The proliferation of online access to social science statistical and numeric data sources, such as the U.S. Census Bureau's American Fact Finder, has lead to an increased interest in supporting these sources in academic libraries. Many large libraries have been able to devote staff to data services for years, and recently smaller academic libraries have recognized the need to provide numeric data services and support. This guidebook serves as a primer to developing and supporting social science statistical and numerical data sources in the academic library. It provides strategies for the establishment of data services and offers short descriptions of the essential sources of free and commercial social science statistical and numeric data. Finally, it discusses the future of numeric data services, including the integration of statistics and data into library instruction and the use of Web 2.0 tools to visualize data. - Written for a general reference audience with little knowledge of data services and sources who would like to incorporate support into their general reference practice - Combines information on establishing data services with an introduction to available statistical and numeric data sources - Provides insight into the integration of statistics and data into library instruction and the social science research process

Official Statistics 4.0

Official Statistics 4.0 PDF Author: Walter J. Radermacher
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783030314941
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 158

Book Description
This book explores official statistics and their social function in modern societies. Digitisation and globalisation are creating completely new opportunities and risks, a context in which facts (can) play an enormously important part if they are produced with a quality that makes them credible and purpose-specific. In order for this to actually happen, official statistics must continue to actively pursue the modernisation of their working methods. This book is not about the technical and methodological challenges associated with digitisation and globalisation; rather, it focuses on statistical sociology, which scientifically deals with the peculiarities and pitfalls of governing-by-numbers, and assigns statistics a suitable position in the future informational ecosystem. Further, the book provides a comprehensive overview of modern issues in official statistics, embodied in a historical and conceptual framework that endows it with different and innovative perspectives. Central to this work is the quality of statistical information provided by official statistics. The implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the form of indicators is another driving force in the search for answers, and is addressed here. This book will be of interest to a broad readership. The topics of sociology, epistemology, statistical history and the management of production processes, which are important for official statistics and their role in social decision-making processes, are generally not dealt with in statistics books. The book is primary intended for official statisticians, but researchers and advanced students in statistics, economics, sociology and the political sciences will find the book equally stimulating. Last but not least, it offers a valuable source of reflection for policymakers and stakeholders.

Forest Products Statistical Information Systems of EU and EFTA

Forest Products Statistical Information Systems of EU and EFTA PDF Author: Philip A. Wardle
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9789004129191
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
This book is the only in its kind to review the commodity coding, definitions and methodology applying to the collection of forest products production and trade statistics. The analysis - both qualitative as quantitative - contains valuable information for anybody who want to gain more insight in the methodology behind the figures. Recommendations are made for improving the data collection framework. Special attention has been given to the comparability of commodity coding systems, comparability of terms and definitions at the national and international levels, conversion factors to convert volume and weight, double counting and the coverage of production and trade of tropical timber and its products. This relates to the efforts of the ECE, FAO, EUROSTAT and ITTO who jointly collect such statistics from their member states, with the aim to streamlining the collection process and to reducing the burden for their statistical correspondents. Data on commercial trade of all commodities, among which forest products, is also collected by UN - COMTRADE and Eurostat - COMEXT. The possible use of their data for reporting to the joint questionnaire is used.
