Book Description
DANS UN PREMIER TEMPS, ON ETUDIE L'ADSORPTION DU TENSIOACTIF NON IONIQUE SEUL (UN OCTYLPHENOL POLYOXYETHYLENIQUE) SUR DES SILICES POREUSES OU COLLOIDALES. A PARTIR DE LA DETERMINATION DES ISOTHERMES D'ADSORPTION ET DES ENTHALPIES DE DEPLACEMENT, NOUS EN DEDUISONS LA FORMATION, SUR LA SURFACE, D'AGREGATS DONT LA STRUCTURE EST PROCHE DE CELLE DES MICELLES. ENSUITE, L'ETUDE DES MELANGES (CONSTITUES DU TENSIOACTIF NON IONIQUE PRECEDENT AVEC SOIT UN ALKYL SULFONATE SOIT UN ALKYLPYRIDINIUM) EST REALISEE EN DEUX ETAPES. D'UNE PART UNE ETUDE DES PROPRIETES DES SOLUTIONS AVEC NOTAMMENT LA DETERMINATION DES ENTHALPIES DE MICELLISATION EN FONCTION DE LA COMPOSITION NOUS PERMET DE CALCULER UN PARAMETRE D'INTERACTION ENTRE TENSIOACTIFS QUE L'ON PEUT COMPARER AUX MODELES COURANTS. LES RESULTATS OBTENUS MONTRENT UNE PART ENTHALPIQUE IMPORTANTE DANS LA STABILISATION DES MICELLES MIXTES QUE NOUS INTERPRETONS PAR LA REHYDRATATION DES MAILLONS OXYETHYLENIQUES. D'AUTRE PART, UNE ETUDE DE L'ADSORPTION MONTRE QUE, GRACE A LA FORMATION D'AGREGATS SUPERFICIELS MIXTES, L'ADSORPTION DU TENSIOACTIF ANIONIQUE SUR LA SILICE (IL NE S'ADSORBE PAS LORSQU'IL EST SEUL) EST RENDUE POSSIBLE MAIS AU DETRIMENT DE LA QUANTITE TOTALE ADSORBEE. PAR CONTRE, DANS LE CAS DU CATIONIQUE, ON OBSERVE UN NET ACCROISSEMENT DE LA QUANTITE TOTALE ADSORBEE PAR RAPPORT AUX COMPOSES SEULS. LA COMPARAISON DES AGREGATS SUPERFICIELS ET DES MICELLES, TANT AU NIVEAU DE LEUR COMPOSITION QU'A CELUI DES ENTHALPIES D'EXCES DE FORMATION DE CES DIFFERENTS AGREGATS, MONTRE QUE LES INTERACTIONS LATERALES PREDOMINENT DANS LE PROCESSUS D'ADSORPTION ET SONT SIMILAIRES A CELLES CONDUISANT A LA FORMATION DES MICELLES

Book Description
The present book is the outcome of an Advanced Study Institute meeting, which was held in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, in Northern Greece, from 12-25 May 1991 and attended by 69 delegates from 18 countries. The Institute brought together scientists, engineers and technologists currently involved in basic and applied research on the different aspects of flotation. The Institute covered subjects in four major areas of flotation: a) fundamentals; b) chemical technology aspects; c) mineral processing; and d) water and wastewater treatment. Apart from the papers reproduced in this volume, several short oral communications were also presented. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Hellenic Chemical Products & Fertilizers Co. Ltd. mixed sulphides plant, in Chalkidiki. Conference participants, whose interest and research projects are in this broad field of science and engineering, provided a well-informed discussion of the problems encountered, as well as possible directions of future technological developments. It is hoped that this book is not only a good record of the presentations made (formal and informal), analyzing the state-of-the-art in flotation, but will also be helpful for students, scientists and technologists working in the fields of separation processes and in particular mineral processing and wastewater engineering. All the invited speakers and the participants made this summer school possible, worthwhile and enjoyable. The sponsorship by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division is gratefully ack nowledged. The Editors would like to thank the members of the Organizing Committee, Dr. B.A.

Uncorked

Uncorked PDF Author: Gérard Liger-Belair
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 140084780X
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 213

Book Description
The spectacular science behind champagne's effervescence Uncorked quenches our curiosity about the inner workings of one of the world's most prized beverages. Esteemed for its freshness, vitality, and sensuality, champagne is a wine of great complexity. Mysteries aplenty gush forth with the popping of that cork. Just what is that fizz? Can you judge champagne quality by how big the bubbles are, how long they last, or how they behave before they fade? And why does serving champagne in a long-stemmed flute prolong its chill and effervescence? Through lively prose and a wealth of state-of-the-art photos, this revised edition of Uncorked unlocks the door to what champagne is all about. Providing an unprecedented close-up view of the beauty in the bubbles, Gérard Liger-Belair presents images that look surprisingly like lovely flowers, geometric patterns, even galaxies as the bubbles rise through the glass and burst forth on the surface. He illustrates how bubbles form not on the glass itself but are "born" out of debris stuck on the glass wall, how they rise, and how they pop. Offering a colorful history of champagne, Liger-Belair tells us how it is made and he asks if global warming could spell champagne's demise. In a brand-new afterword, he updates the reader on new developments in the world of bubble science and delves even more deeply into the processes that give champagne its unique and beautiful character. Bubbly may tickle the nose, but Uncorked tackles what the nose and the naked eye cannot—the spectacular science that gives champagne its charm and champagne drinkers immeasurable pleasure.

Applied Mineralogy in the Mining Industry

Applied Mineralogy in the Mining Industry PDF Author: W. Petruk
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080527337
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
Techniques of performing applied mineralogy investigations, and applications and capabilities of recently developed instruments for measuring mineral properties are explored in this book intended for practicing applied mineralogists, students in mineralogy and metallurgy, and mineral processing engineers. The benefits of applied mineralogy are presented by using in-depth applied mineralogy studies on base metal ores, gold ores, porphyry copper ores, iron ores and industrial minerals as examples. The chapter on base metal ores includes a discussion on the effects of liberation, particle sizes and surfaces coatings of Pb, Cu, Fe, Ca and So4- on the recoveries of sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. The chapter on gold discusses various methods of determining the quantities of gold in different minerals, including 'invisible' gold in pyrite and arsenopyrite, so that a balance of the distribution of gold among the minerals can be calculated. This book also discusses the roles of pyrite, oxygen, moisture and bacterial (thiobacillus ferrooxidans) on reactions that produce acidic drainage from tailings piles, and summarizes currently used and proposed methods of remediation of acidic drainage.
