Du fait de leur potentiel pour réduire les émissions polluantes, les stratégies de combustion homogène ont été étudiées sur la base de moteurs Diesel de véhicules industriels. Les stratégies d’injection multiple où seulement une partie du carburant est injectée pendant la phase de compression ont d’abord été étudiées sur moteur monocylindre. La combinaison de cette stratégie avec des forts taux d’EGR a alors permis une réduction significative des émissions jusqu’à la pleine charge du moteur. Dans une seconde approche, des expériences ont été réalisées pour améliorer la formation du mélange pour les stratégies de combustion en pré-mélange total. L’utilisation d’injecteurs à double angle de nappe avec diamètre de trou réduit s’est alors avérée très prometteuse car elle a permis de faire fonctionner le moteur à la limite de la stoechiométrie tout en garantissant de faibles niveaux de suies et de consommation. Un moteur multicylindre bi-mode combinant des stratégies de combustion en pré-mélange et Diesel conventionnelle a enfin été étudié pour prendre en compte les contraintes existant dans de réelles applications moteur. Un travail de simulation a été effectué en support de tous ces résultats expérimentaux. Des simulations Star-CF/RIF ont été réalisées pour analyser les interactions jet-paroi et améliorer la géométrie des chambres de combustion. Des études paramétriques ont également été effectuées avec le code de calcul CHEMKIN pour mettre en évidence l’influence de la cinétique chimique sur les mécanismes de combustion. Dans ce contexte, le modèle une-zone initial a été largement modifié pour ajouter la possibilité de calculs multizone et incorporer des modèles de jet.
