Le milieu carcéral est un monde méconnu de beaucoup d'entre nous, suscitant alors de nombreuses interrogations. A première vue, rien ne le rattache à l'univers de la maternité. Pourtant, en France, une cinquantaine de femmes par an mènent leur grossesse à terme et vivent avec leur enfant au sein de la prison. Devant cette situation particulière, nous nous sommes intéressés à la prison des femmes de Rennes. Nous y avons effectué une étude sociologique basée sur la réalisation d'entretiens auprès de différents professionnels de santé intervenant régulièrement auprès du couple mère-enfant (sages-femmes, puéricultrice, psychologue, gynécologue obstétricien). Nous avons également tenu un journal de bord lors de nos visites au sein de ce centre pénitentiaire. L'analyse de ces matériaux, nous a permis de mettre en avant l'importance de leur prise en charge médico-sociale. Des adaptations peuvent être observées de la part de ces professionnels, que ce soit dans leur manière d'exercer, dans leur accommodation de l'espace carcéral ou encore dans leurs interactions relationnelles avec le personnel pénitentiaire et les femmes incarcérées. Cela nous a également permis de distinguer un statut particulier de la mère et de l'enfant, tentant de recréer au sein de la prison un espace de « normalité », prouvant ainsi qu'au delà de ces barreaux, la vie continue.
