Les travaux présentés dans la première partie de ce mémoire concernent la modélisation et la caractérisation des effets non-linéaires d'ordre deux induits dans des verres massifs et des fibres optiques en silice par la méthode de « poling » thermique. Les efforts se sont concentrés d'une part sur la mise au point d'une méthode originale de caractérisation pennettant de reconstruire la répartition spatiale de la susceptibilité X(2) avec une résolution spatiale inférieure à 50 nm. Cette méthode a conduit pour la première fois à l'observation expérimentale de la présence d'un champ électrique induit par effet électrostatique. L'existence de ce champ avait été prédit théoriquement en supposant la condition d'énergie électrostatique minimale vérifiée. D'autre part, l'interprétation de l'apparition de ces effets non-linéaires s'appuit sur un modèle théorique mettant en jeu des équations différentielles partielles décrivant les phénomènes de diffusion et conduction ionique. La seconde partie concerne la thématique « matériaux photoniques pour les télécommunications très haut débit» développée au sein de l'Institut de Recherche sur les Composants logiciels et matériels pour l'Information et la Communication Avancée (IRCICA). Le développement de cet axe de recherche s'est concrétisé par la mise en place en particulier d'une tour de fibrage et par la suite de la réalisation de fibres à cristal photonique. Ces fibres de nouvelle génération sont constituées d'un réseau périodique dont les motifs correspondent à des régions d'indice de réfraction différent de celui de la silice. La présence de ce réseau permet le confinenemt de la lumière dans le centre de la fibre (cœur) constitué d'un défaut de périodicité. Ces fibres présentent des propriétés optiques originales par rapport aux fibres standard à saut d'indice et laissent entrevoir l'apparition de nouvelles fonctionnalités optiques tant leurs propriétés optiques sont ajustables sur une grande gamme spectrale. La mise en place de cette thématique a nécessité le développement ex nihilo d'outils de modélisation capables à la fois de calculer les propriétés optiques de telles fibres (telles que l'indice effectif de propagation des modes confinés dans le cœur) mais également de concevoir des composants optiques répondant aux besoins spécifiques des experimentateurs du groupe. Pour ce dernier point je présenterai en particulier la méthode qui nous a permis de résoudre le problème inverse (à savoir. à partir d'une propriété optique donnée, trouver la géométrie de la section transverse de la fibre, si elle existe). Cette méthode est basée sur l'application d'un algorithme génétique.
