Book Description

Modelling Small Deformations of Polycrystals
Author: J. Gittus
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400941811
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 424
Book Description
The scientific work of Jean Mandel has been exceptionally rich in the area of the mechanics of solids; the subjects which he has treated have been extremely diverse, from the theory of plasticity, buckling, soil mechanics, visco-elasticity, the theory of reduced models, and thermo dynamics, to percolation in porous media. But throughout this com prehensive work Jean Mandel has always maintained his interest in forming connections between the properties of materials (strength, deformability, viscosity) and the properties of their basic constituents. What is sometimes referred to in materials science as the transition from the microscopic to the macroscopic has for him been a very constant direction of research, which he never ceased to encourage in the Laboratoire de Mecanique des Solides of which he was the director. It is known that in the plasticity of metals permanent deformations must be sought in intercrystalline slip and more generally in disloca tions and the various microstructural defects. Before deformation of polycrystals is tackled, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms which take place within the crystal: the different systems of slip which may be activated and also the elementary mechanisms of twinning. Jean Mandel has shown how to make the transition from the behaviour of the single crystal to that of the polycrystal and has given the relation ships between the overall permanent deformation of the polycrystal and the plastic deformation of the single crystal.

ISBN: 1786307650
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
This book studies the flow of materials and the influence of strain rates on the relationship between imposed stresses and the dynamic deformations obtained. It provides applications for shaping, molecular molding, shrink-fit assembly and welding, including details of the various specific processes for implementation at high strain rates, illustrated by numerous industrial examples. Rheology, Physical and Mechanical Behavior of Materials 1 presents analyses of plasticity mechanisms at microscopic and macroscopic scales, and of the various forms of stressstrain behavior laws according to working speeds, mechanisms, athermics, viscoplasticity and formability limits at types and speeds of change. It is aimed at researchers involved in the mechanics of deformable media, as well as industrial design and manufacturing departments

Mechanical Behaviour of Materials
Author: Dominique François
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400725469
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 660
Book Description
Advances in technology are demanding ever-increasing mastery over the materials being used: the challenge is to gain a better understanding of their behaviour, and more particularly of the relations between their microstructure and their macroscopic properties. This work, of which this is the first volume, aims to provide the means by which this challenge may be met. Starting from the mechanics of deformation, it develops the laws governing macroscopic behaviour – expressed as the constitutive equations – always taking account of the physical phenomena which underlie rheological behaviour. The most recent developments are presented, in particular those concerning heterogeneous materials such as metallic alloys, polymers and composites. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major classes of material behaviour. As the subtitles indicate, Volume 1 deals with micro- and macroscopic constitutive behaviour and Volume 2 with damage and fracture mechanics. A third volume will be devoted to exercises and their full solutions complementing the content of these two first volumes. Most of the chapters end with a set of exercises, to many of which either the full solution or hints on how to obtain this are given; each volume is profusely illustrated with explanatory diagrams and with electron-microscope photographs. This book, now in its second edition, has been rigorously re-written, updated and modernised for a new generation. The authors improved the existing material, in particular in modifying the organisation, and added new up-to-date content. Understanding the subject matter requires a good knowledge of solid mechanics and materials science; the main elements of these fields are given in a set of annexes at the end of the first volume. The authors also thought it interesting for the readers to give as footnotes some information about the many scientists whose names are attached to theories and formulae and whose memories must be celebrated. Whilst the present book, as well as Volume 2, is addressed primarily to graduate students, part of it can be used in undergraduate courses; and it is hoped that practising engineers and scientists will find the information it conveys useful. It is the authors’ hope also that English-speaking readers will want to learn about the aspects of French culture, and more particularly of the French school of micromechanics of materials, which this treatment undoubtedly displays.

Grain Boundaries and Crystalline Plasticity
Author: Louisette Priester
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118603109
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
The main purpose of this book is to put forward the fundamental role of grain boundaries in the plasticity of crystalline materials. To understand this role requires a multi-scale approach to plasticity: starting from the atomic description of a grain boundary and its defects, moving on to the elemental interaction processes between dislocations and grain boundaries, and finally showing how the microscopic phenomena influence the macroscopic behaviors and constitutive laws. It involves bringing together physical, chemical and mechanical studies. The investigated properties are: deformation at low and high temperature, creep, fatigue and rupture.

Generalized Continua and Dislocation Theory
Author: Carlo Sansour
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3709112222
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 323
Book Description
Defects, dislocations and the general theory.- Approaches to generalized continua.- Generalized continuum modelling of crystal plasticity.- Introduction to discrete dislocation dynamics. The book contains four lectures on generalized continua and dislocation theory, reflecting the treatment of the subject at different scales. G. Maugin provides a continuum formulation of defects at the heart of which lies the notion of the material configuration and the material driving forces of in-homogeneities such as dislocations, disclinations, point defects, cracks, phase-transition fronts and shock waves. C. Sansour and S. Skatulla start with a compact treatment of linear transformation groups with subsequent excursion into the continuum theory of generalized continua. After a critical assessment a unified framework of the same is presented. The next contribution by S. Forest gives an account on generalized crystal plasticity. Finally, H. Zbib provides an account of dislocation dynamics and illustrates its fundamental importance at the smallest scale. In three contributions extensive computational results of many examples are presented.
