Author: Marco Belpoliti
Publisher: Johan & Levi Editore
ISBN: 9788860101068
Category : Architecture

Book Description
Ettore Sottsass Jr. - architect, designer, writer and artist - is a figure of international standing who needs no introduction. His career has been broadly documented and "Sottsass the man" was recounted in first person in the autobiography published in 2010. This photographic book sets out to talk about Sottsass by presenting a selection of photographs taken over almost 30 years by the designer's friend Giuseppe Varchetta, a psychologist with a passion for photography. Varchetta's portraits and the brief comments that accompany them connect the public figure and the private individual in a sort of emotional biography in images, a journey in stages from 1978 to the closing moments of Sottsass' life. The book also features a text by Marco Belpoliti that introduce the images and the figure, the long interview Ettore Sottsass gave to Hans-Ulrich Obrist in February 2001 (first published in 2003) and a farewell message by Sottsass' friend Michele De Lucchi. Text in English and Italian.

Book Description
"In order to allow us to listen to our thoughts, someone came up with the idea of inventing words. Someone thought that the sound of the words could in some way represent the wanderings of our thoughts, of some of our thoughts. Someone else got the idea of representing thoughts by making marks, by making them with light, with something you could see. I make marks. What I mean is that I always, and only, draw in order to represent certain thought that pursue me. These thoughts trace out the forms, dimensions, weight, materials, colors and temperatures to use in building the stage onto which I, or we, will drag existence, including - in the theater set - all the furniture, curtains, lamps, and objects in general - you know, vases for flowers, plates for eating, baskets for bread (if there is any) or fruit (if there is any) and so on ... (Ettore Sottsass, 1997)"--Back cover.

Made in Italy
Author: Grace Lees-Maffei
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 0857853902
Category : Design

Pages : 562
Book Description
Goods made or designed in Italy enjoy a profile which far outstrips the country's modest manufacturing output. Italy's glorious design heritage and reputation for style and innovation has 'added value' to products made in Italy. Since 1945, Italian design has commanded an increasing amount of attention from design journalists, critics and consumers. But is Italian design a victim of its own celebrity? Made in Italy brings together leading design historians to explore this question, discussing both the history and significance of design from Italy and its international influence. Addressing a wide range of Italian design fields, including car design, graphic design, industrial and interior design and ceramics, well-known designers such as Alberto Rosselli and Ettore Sottsass, Jr. and iconic brands such as Olivetti, Vespa and Alessi, the book explores the historical, cultural and social influences that shaped Italian design, and how these iconic designs have contributed to the modern canon of Italian-inspired goods.
