Endgame for ETA

Endgame for ETA PDF Author: Teresa Whitfield
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190238046
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 437

Book Description
The violent Basque separatist group ETA took shape in Franco's Spain, yet claimed the majority of its victims under democracy. For most Spaniards it became an aberration, a criminal and terrorist band whose persistence defied explanation. Others, mainly Basques (but only some Basques) understood ETA as the violent expression of a political conflict that remained the unfinished business of Spain's transition to democracy. Such differences hindered efforts to 'defeat' ETA's terrorism on the one hand and 'resolve the Basque conflict' on the other for more than three decades. Endgame for ETA offers a compelling account of the long path to ETA's declaration of a definitive end to its armed activity in October 2011. Its political surrogates remain as part of a resurgence of regional nationalism - in the Basque Country as in Catalonia - that is but one element of multiple crises confronting Spain. The Basque case has been cited as an ex- ample of the perils of 'talking to terrorists'. Drawing on extensive field research, Teresa Whitfield argues that while negotiations did not prosper, a form of 'virtual peacemaking' was an essential complement to robust police action and social condemnation. Together they helped to bring ETA's violence to an end and return its grievances to the channels of normal politics.

Eta Products and Theta Series Identities

Eta Products and Theta Series Identities PDF Author: Günter Köhler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642161529
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 627

Book Description
This monograph deals with products of Dedekind's eta function, with Hecke theta series on quadratic number fields, and with Eisenstein series. The author brings to the public the large number of identities that have been discovered over the past 20 years, the majority of which have not been published elsewhere. The book will be of interest to graduate students and scholars in the field of number theory and, in particular, modular forms. It is not an introductory text in this field. Nevertheless, some theoretical background material is presented that is important for understanding the examples in Part II of the book. In Part I relevant definitions and essential theorems -- such as a complete proof of the structure theorems for coprime residue class groups in quadratic number fields that are not easily accessible in the literature -- are provided. Another example is a thorough description of an algorithm for listing all eta products of given weight and level, together with proofs of some results on the bijection between these eta products and lattice simplices.

Homeland

Homeland PDF Author: Fernando Aramburu
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
ISBN: 1509858059
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 622

Book Description
The international bestseller, longlisted for the Dublin Literary Award 2021. Fernando Aramburu's Homeland is an epic and heartbreaking story of two best friends whose families are divided by the conflicting loyalties of terrorism. ‘It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that was so persuasive and moving’ – Mario Vargas Llosa, author of Time of the Hero. The Basque Country, Spain, 2011. Miren and Bittori have lived side by side in a small Basque town all their lives. Their husbands play cards together, their children play and eventually go out drinking together. The terrorist threat posed by ETA seems to affect them little. When Bittori’s husband starts receiving threatening letters – demanding money, accusing him of being a police informant – she turns to her friend for help. But Miren’s loyalties are torn: her son has just been recruited as a terrorist and to denounce them would be to condemn her own flesh and blood. Tensions rise, relationships fracture, and events move towards a tragic conclusion . . . ‘Is Aramburu the Tolstoy of the Basque country, author of a Spanish language War and Peace?’ – Guardian

Tales of Hoffmann

Tales of Hoffmann PDF Author: E.T.A. Hoffmann
Publisher: Penguin UK
ISBN: 0141914882
Category : Fiction
Languages : en

This selection of Hoffmann's finest short stories vividly demonstrates his intense imagination and preoccupation with the supernatural, placing him at the forefront of both surrealism and the modern horror genre. Suspense dominates tales such as Mademoiselle de Scudery, in which an apprentice goldsmith and a female novelist find themselves caught up in a series of jewel thefts and murders. In the sinister Sandman, a young man's sanity is tormented by fears about a mysterious chemist, while in The Choosing of a Bride a greedy father preys on the weaknesses of his daughter's suitors. Master of the bizarre, Hoffman creates a sinister and unsettling world combining love and madness, black humour and bewildering illusion.

Eta Carinae and the Supernova Impostors

Eta Carinae and the Supernova Impostors PDF Author: Kris Davidson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461422752
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
In 1965 Fritz Zwicky proposed a class of supernovae that he called "Type V", described as "excessively faint at maximum". There were only two members, SN1961v and Eta Carinae. We now know that Eta Carinae was not a true supernova, but if it were observed today in a distant galaxy we would call it a "supernova impostor". 170 years ago it experienced a "great eruption" lasting 20 years, expelling 10 solar masses or more, and survived. Eta Carinae is now acknowledged as the most massive, most luminous star in our region of the Galaxy, and it may be our only example of a very massive star in a pre-supernova state. In this book the editors and contributing authors review its remarkable history, physical state of the star and its ejecta, and its continuing instability. Chapters also include its relation to other massive, unstable stars, the massive star progenitors of supernovae, and the "first" stars in the Universe.

Women and ETA

Women and ETA PDF Author: Carrie Hamilton
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1847796788
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
Drawing on a unique body of oral history interviews, archival material and published sources, this book shows how women’s participation in radical Basque nationalism has changed from the founding of ETA in 1959 to the present. It analyses several aspects of women’s nationalist activism: collaboration and direct activism in ETA, cultural movements, motherhood, prison and feminism. By focusing on gender politics Women and ETA offers new perspectives on the history of ETA, including recruitment, the militarization of radical Basque nationalism, and the role of the media in shaping popular understandings of ‘terrorism’. These arguments are directly relevant to the study of women in other insurgence and terrorist movements. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of history, Hispanic studies, gender studies, anthropology and politics, as well as to journalists and readers interested in women’s participation in contemporary conflicts and terrorist movements.
