Se ha observado en diferentes ocasiones que la sociolingüística variacionista no era otra cosa que dialectología social o dialectología urbana. Esto es en parte cierto y en parte falso. Por una parte, existe una relativa continuidad de propósitos y de métodos. Por otra, hay varias diferencias sustanciales. La más importante de las diferencias tiene que ver con la hipótesis básica desarrollada por la dialectología geográfica: que cada palabra tiene su propia historia. Paradójicamente, esta hipótesis hace casi inviable el caracter científico de la geolingüística, pues las verdades científicas sólo pueden enunciarse de lo que se repite, de lo que es común o generalizable. Esa historicidad suma es la que permitió justificar la materialidad descriptiva de la geolingüística. La hipótesis fundamental de la sociolingüística variacionista, en cambio, ha sido casi desde el principio que sí es posible establecer leyes generales, lo cual es mucho más ortodoxo y conservador.
