Book Description
Increasing concern for sustainable water use has the agriculture industry working toward higher efficiency use of irrigation water. The average irrigation water use efficiency throughout the United States is 45%, which is extremely poor. Advancements in crop management have continued to allow producers to know more about the conditions in their field from nutrient management and pest control, to understanding yield spatially. Recent mechanical advancements have improved the capabilities of center pivot irrigation systems to water various depths throughout the field. This technology is known as variable rate irrigation (VRI). With VRI comes a whole new strategy for irrigation. Advancements in remote and mobile sensing have played a major role in collecting data spatially throughout a field in order to aid in the management of VRI. The goal of this study was to provide a method for potential VRI technology adopters to evaluate potential water savings using datasets collected with varying levels of complexity. The proposed method was based on estimating root zone water holding capacity (RZWHC) spatially across two case study fields and treating each with URI and both sector and zone-controlled VRI.

Coping with Water Scarcity

Coping with Water Scarcity PDF Author: Luis Santos Pereira
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402095791
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
One of the main problems confronting the world of the 21st Century is a shortage of water. There is already severe scarcity in many regions of the world, causing tremendous problems for local populations and indeed entire societies. There is insufficient water available for the production of food to alleviate poverty and starvation; the lack of water hampers industrial, urban and tourism development, forcing restrictions on other sectors, especially agriculture; health problems arise as the deterioration of ground and surface waters favours water-borne diseases, which flourish in the absence of decent water distribution and sewerage systems. Water conflicts still arise in areas under stress, while water for nature has become a vanishing priority in such zones. This book is a guide to the establishment of regional and/or local guidelines for developing and implementing new ideas for coping with water scarcity. The basic premise underlying the book is that water scarcity will persist, so personal, human and society-wide skills will be needed to cope with it while living in harmony with the necessary environmental constraints. The book provides basic information to assist decision makers, water managers, engineers, agronomists, social scientists and other professions (and their students) in formulating coherent, hopefully harmonious and consolidated views on the issue. Guidelines are also given for introducing the general public to the concept of water scarcity and how to deal with it.

Internet of Things and Analytics for Agriculture, Volume 3

Internet of Things and Analytics for Agriculture, Volume 3 PDF Author: Prasant Kumar Pattnaik
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 981166210X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
The book discusses one of the major challenges in agriculture which is delivery of cultivate produce to the end consumers with best possible price and quality. Currently all over the world, it is found that around 50% of the farm produce never reaches the end consumer due to wastage and suboptimal prices. The authors present solutions to reduce the transport cost, predictability of prices on the past data analytics and the current market conditions, and number of middle hops and agents between the farmer and the end consumer using IoT-based solutions. Again, the demand by consumption of agricultural products could be predicted quantitatively; however, the variation of harvest and production by the change of farm's cultivated area, weather change, disease and insect damage, etc., could be difficult to be predicted, so that the supply and demand of agricultural products has not been controlled properly. To overcome, this edited book designed the IoT-based monitoring system to analyze crop environment and the method to improve the efficiency of decision making by analyzing harvest statistics. The book is also useful for academicians working in the areas of climate changes.

Precision Agriculture for Sustainability and Environmental Protection

Precision Agriculture for Sustainability and Environmental Protection PDF Author: Margaret Oliver
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136468242
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 351

Book Description
Precision agriculture (PA) involves the application of technologies and agronomic principles to manage spatial and temporal variation associated with all aspects of agricultural production in order to improve crop performance and environmental quality. The focus of this book is to introduce a non-specialist audience to the the role of PA in food security, environmental protection, and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as its economic benefits. The technologies covered include yield monitors and remote sensing, and the key agronomic principles addressed are the optimal delivery of fertilizers, water and pesticides to crops only when and where these are required. As a result, it is shown that both food production and resource efficiency can be maximized, without waste or damage to the environment, such as can occur from excessive fertilizer or pesticide applications. The authors of necessity describe some technicalities about PA, but the overall aim is to introduce readers who are unfamiliar with PA to this very broad subject and to demonstrate the potential impact of PA on the environment and economy. Chapter 3 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 3.0 license.
