Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art

Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art PDF Author: Darius A. Spieth
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004276750
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 535

Book Description
Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.

Botticelli PDF Author: Ana Debenedetti
Publisher: Reaktion Books
ISBN: 9781789149289
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
A revealing look at the commercial strategy and diverse output of this canonical Renaissance artist. In this vivid account, Ana Debenedetti reexamines the life and work of Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli through a novel lens: his business acumen. Focusing on the organization of Botticelli’s workshop and the commercial strategies he devised to make his way in Florence’s very competitive art market, Debenedetti looks with fresh eyes at the remarkable career and output of this pivotal artist within the wider context of Florentine society and culture. Uniquely, Debenedetti evaluates Botticelli’s celebrated works, like The Birth of Venus, alongside less familiar forms such as tapestry and embroidery, showing the breadth of the artist’s oeuvre and his talent as a designer across media.

Gisbert Combaz (1869-1941)

Gisbert Combaz (1869-1941) PDF Author: Jane Block
Publisher: University of Washington Press
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
Gisbert Combaz is among a handful of turn-of-the century poster artists to create a personal style that is still recognizable today. His posters for the exhibition society La Libre Esthetique and his sets of postcards are as prized now as they were in Combaz's day. As this lavishly illustrated book reveals, however, Combaz was also an accomplished graphic artist, painter, and art critic who made important contributions to Western understanding of the art of the Far East and was an inspiring teacher to several generations of Belgian artists. For this thoroughly researched first study of Combaz's life, the author consulted family documents, unpublished photographs, works in private collections, and institutional and governmental archives to offer a full assessment of the man and his oeuvre. Included are a biographical essay and an analysis of his major works, with extensive documentation of his 24 posters.
