La utilización de humedales artificiales para el tratamiento de aguas servidas es de gran interés en la actualidad ya que la demanda de agua es cada vez mayor y que las fuentes mas económicas de la misma están cada vez mas cerca de agotarse, además hay un volumen creciente de residuos biológicos y químicos que son arrojados a la red aguas superficiales, desde este punto de vista y teniendo en cuenta que la construcción de plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales es muy costosa, es importante buscar alternativas que permitan el tratamiento de dichas aguas y que reduzcan los costos. En este trabajo se estudio la eficiencia de remoción de materia orgánica en humedales artificiales de flujo horizontal subsuperficial ubicados en la planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales de la UTP, dichos humedales se alimentaron con agua residual sintética preparada con sustancias que simulan la composición y concentración del agua residual domestica. Se evaluaron tres humedales sembrados con la especie Phragmites australis, cada uno con condiciones diferentes de operación. Para evaluar la remoción de materia orgánica se utilizaron los análisis como demanda química de Oxigeno (DQO) por el método fotométrico, DBO5 por el método winkler, Fósforo por el método del acido ascórbico, Nitrógeno Total por método Kjeldahl (NTK) y Sólidos suspendidos totales (SST) por gravimetría. En este documento se encuentra información pertinente acerca de los humedales artificiales de flujo horizontal subsuperficial y de su utilización en el tratamiento de aguas residuales; así como la información necesaria para comprender los mecanismos que se llevan a cabo en el interior de este tipo de sistemas, también contiene los resultados de la investigación, los análisis de los mismos y algunas conclusiones y recomendaciones.
