Book Description
Developed by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and now in its fourth edition, Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning is the essential text for strength and conditioning professionals and students. This comprehensive resource, created by 30 expert contributors in the field, explains the key theories, concepts, and scientific principles of strength training and conditioning as well as their direct application to athletic competition and performance. The scope and content of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Fourth Edition With HKPropel Access, have been updated to convey the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a strength and conditioning professional and to address the latest information found on the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam. The evidence-based approach and unbeatable accuracy of the text make it the primary resource to rely on for CSCS exam preparation. The text is organized to lead readers from theory to program design and practical strategies for administration and management of strength and conditioning facilities. The fourth edition contains the most current research and applications and several new features: Online videos featuring 21 resistance training exercises demonstrate proper exercise form for classroom and practical use. Updated research—specifically in the areas of high-intensity interval training, overtraining, agility and change of direction, nutrition for health and performance, and periodization—helps readers better understand these popular trends in the industry. A new chapter with instructions and photos presents techniques for exercises using alternative modes and nontraditional implements. Ten additional tests, including those for maximum strength, power, and aerobic capacity, along with new flexibility exercises, resistance training exercises, plyometric exercises, and speed and agility drills help professionals design programs that reflect current guidelines. Key points, chapter objectives, and learning aids including key terms and self-study questions provide a structure to help students and professionals conceptualize the information and reinforce fundamental facts. Application sidebars provide practical application of scientific concepts that can be used by strength and conditioning specialists in real-world settings, making the information immediately relatable and usable. Online learning tools delivered through HKPropel provide students with 11 downloadable lab activities for practice and retention of information. Further, both students and professionals will benefit from the online videos of 21 foundational exercises that provide visual instruction and reinforce proper technique. Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Fourth Edition, provides the most comprehensive information on organization and administration of facilities, testing and evaluation, exercise techniques, training adaptations, program design, and structure and function of body systems. Its scope, precision, and dependability make it the essential preparation text for the CSCS exam as well as a definitive reference for strength and conditioning professionals to consult in their everyday practice. Book Description
A concise and self-contained introduction to causal inference, increasingly important in data science and machine learning. The mathematization of causality is a relatively recent development, and has become increasingly important in data science and machine learning. This book offers a self-contained and concise introduction to causal models and how to learn them from data. After explaining the need for causal models and discussing some of the principles underlying causal inference, the book teaches readers how to use causal models: how to compute intervention distributions, how to infer causal models from observational and interventional data, and how causal ideas could be exploited for classical machine learning problems. All of these topics are discussed first in terms of two variables and then in the more general multivariate case. The bivariate case turns out to be a particularly hard problem for causal learning because there are no conditional independences as used by classical methods for solving multivariate cases. The authors consider analyzing statistical asymmetries between cause and effect to be highly instructive, and they report on their decade of intensive research into this problem. The book is accessible to readers with a background in machine learning or statistics, and can be used in graduate courses or as a reference for researchers. The text includes code snippets that can be copied and pasted, exercises, and an appendix with a summary of the most important technical concepts.

Book Description
In this revised and expanded second edition of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, now with over 300 color photographs, leading exercise science professionals explore the scientific principles, concepts, and theories of strength training and conditioning as well as their practical applications to athletic performance. Students, coaches, strength and conditioning specialists, personal trainers, athletic trainers, and other sport science professionals will find state-of-the-art, comprehensive information on structure and function of body systems, training adaptations, testing and evaluation, exercise techniques, program design (aerobic and anaerobic) and training facility organization and administration. Edited by Thomas R. Baechle and Roger W. Earle, Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Second Edition, is an excellent text for students preparing for careers in strength training and conditioning. It is the most comprehensive reference available for strength and conditioning professionals and sports medicine specialists. For people preparing to take the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist examination, it is the primary preparation resource. Those preparing to take the NSCA Certified Personal Trainer examination will also find it to be a valuable resource. The NSCA Certification Commission, the certifying body of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, has developed this text. Each of the book's 26 chapters provides an overview of an important aspect of strength and conditioning and includes chapter objectives, application boxes, key points, key terms, study questions, and questions requiring practical application of key concepts. In Section 1of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Second Edition, experts in exercise physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, biomechanics, endocrinology, sports nutrition, and sport psychology discuss the principles of their respective areas of expertise and how they apply in designing safe, effective strength and conditioning programs. Section 2discusses the selection, administration, scoring, and the interpretation of testing results. Section 3provides information regarding the correction and execution of stretching, warm-up, and resistance training exercises. Section 4applies information from the first three sections to the design of effective strength training and conditioning programs, both aerobic and anaerobic. The three parts of Section 4 address anaerobic exercise prescription, aerobic endurance exercise prescription, and periodization and rehabilitation. The anaerobic prescription section provides guidelines for resistance and plyometric training as well as for speed, agility, and speed endurance programs. Step-by-step guidelines are given for designing strength and conditioning programs, and application boxes illustrate how each variable applies to athletes with different training goals. A unique feature of this edition is the use of scenarios to illustrate how the guidelines presented for each of the program design variables are applied to attain the different training scores. Section 5addresses facility design, scheduling, policies and procedures, maintenance, and risk management concerns.
