Book Description
This dissertation consists of two empirical essays and one theoretical essay. In the first essay, I investigate how sensitivity of CEO's pay-for-performance compensation to stock prices affects firm's payout and investment policies. On the company's payout side, we find that higher delta CEOs tend to execute more share buybacks and pay fewer cash dividends. The evidence supports the notion that stock price sensitive executives particularly favor repurchases as the payout form. On the investment side, we find that higher delta CEOs allocate more money towards share buybacks, direct fewer investment resources to capital expenditures, and cut back employment. Additionally, repurchasing firms experience deterioration in operating performance subsequently following the repurchases. Our result suggests that the sensitivity of executives' compensation to stock price induces CEOs to favor short-term performance over long-term performance. In the second essay, I use an ex-ante and forward-looking stock mispricing measure to examine whether and how equity misvaluation affects corporate stock repurchase activities. In particular, we obtain the equity mispricing measure P/V by normalizing prevailing stock price with the firm's intrinsic value based on Residual Income Model (RIM). In particular, I find that undervalued firms are more likely to conduct buybacks and tend to repurchase more in terms of the percentage of market value of equity and dollar volume of the repurchase. These evidence suggest that equity undervaluation serves as a significant determinant for companies to undertake actual stock repurchase. The primary goal of the third essay is to explain family investment decisions under the assumptions of household member's preferences and efficient risk sharing among them based on the collective household model. By examining the absolute (relative) risk aversions of household welfare function, we demonstrate how household's portfolio allocation in stocks changes with family wealth. This paper examines two types of preference heterogeneity between spouses: parameter heterogeneity and functional form heterogeneity. This study offers an alternative explanation of household portfolio choice corresponding with the observation that wealthier households tend to hold greater share of family wealth in risky assets.

The Essays of Warren Buffett

The Essays of Warren Buffett PDF Author: Lawrence A. Cunningham
Publisher: Carolina Academic Press
ISBN: 1611634474
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
In the third edition of this international best seller, Lawrence Cunningham brings you the latest wisdom from Warren Buffett’s annual letters to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. New material addresses: the financial crisis and its continuing implications for investors, managers and society; the housing bubble at the bottom of that crisis; the debt and derivatives excesses that fueled the crisis and how to deal with them; controlling risk and protecting reputation in corporate governance; Berkshire’s acquisition and operation of Burlington Northern Santa Fe; the role of oversight in heavily regulated industries; investment possibilities today; and weaknesses of popular option valuation models. Some other material has been rearranged to deepen the themes and lessons that the collection has always produced: Buffett’s “owner-related business principles” are in the prologue as a separate subject and valuation and accounting topics are spread over four instead of two sections and reordered to sharpen their payoff. The Essays of Warren Buffett

The Essays of Warren Buffett PDF Author: Warren Buffett
Publisher: Wiley
ISBN: 9781119803270
Category : Corporate governance
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
As in previous editions of The Essays of Warren Buffett, this one retains the architecture and philosophy of the original edition but adds selections from Warren Buffett's most recent annual shareholder letters. All the letters are woven together into a fabric that reads as a complete and coherent narrative of a sound business and investment philosophy. As an aid to all readers, and to enable readers of the previous editions to see what is new in this one, a disposition table at the end of the book shows the various places in this collection where selections from each year's letter appear. Footnotes throughout indicate the year of the annual report from which essays are taken. To avoid interrupting the narrative flow, omissions of text within excerpts are not indicated by ellipses or other punctuation. This new edition is called for not because anything has changed about the fundamentals of Buffett's sound business and investment philosophy but because articulation of that philosophy is always delivered in the context of contemporary events and business conditions so periodic updating is warranted to maintain its currency
