Over the past decades, network technologies across supply chains have been introduced and promoted with the premised benefits for all participants. However industry experience with an adoption process of some technology suggests that some firms have a great amount of uncertainty in estimating the benefits of its adoption. This uncertainty will lead to a slow adoption rates across population in supply chains. In my dissertation, I develop a model to analyze technology adoption in a two-level supply chain: multiple suppliers and multiple buyers. The uncertainty about the benefits is reduced as other firms adopt the technology and information from their experiences becomes available. Thus, at any given time, the estimate of benefit for a firm depends on the number of supplier firms and number of buyer firms who have already adopted the technology. I seek to capture this dependence and analyze its effect on the adoption of technology like radio frequency identification (RFID) technology both on analytical models and empirical study. This study also investigates several important aspects of technology adoption process in supply chains. The dissertation comprises three essays focusing on these aspects in a dynamic adoption process in a two-level supply chain and diffusion of technology in inter-firm networks. I investigate how the dynamic process of uncertainty resolution and environment factors affects the firm's adoption decisions, and empirically examines the diffusion of technology in supply chain networks with several hypotheses to test insights generated from the analytical model.

Agrifood firms in a globalizing and competitive market, both in developing and developed countries, often undertake innovations in products and technologies. Innovators, both firms and other agents, develop supply chains to accommodate the nature of the innovations. In this dissertation, we explore the economics of supply chain design. In the first essay, we analyze an innovator's supply chain design problem. We show that the innovator determines its overall level of production taking advantage of its monopoly power, derived from the innovation, in the output market, and behaves as a monopsony in buying feedstock from contractors. These decisions are constrained by the marginal cost of capital and the properties of production and marketing technologies. When the innovator is risk averse, risks in farm production, processing, and marketing will affect both processed output and the share of feedstock bought through contracts. In the second essay, we develop a framework to analyze adoption of indivisible technologies by small farms using a threshold diffusion model. The article shows that different supply chains may emerge to enable the adoption of these technologies. When the gain from adoption is not affected by scale or ownership of the technology, independent technology dealers or larger farmers may buy the indivisible equipment that embodies the technology and rent it to farmers or enable farmers to outsource the machine's services by supplying custom services. The article derives equilibrium prices and quantities in the output and equipment rental or outsourcing markets. The final chapter presents a conceptual framework depicting the issues and strategies of a firm with an innovation (in product or technology or system). To implement the innovation in terms of procurement of feedstock (intermediate inputs), production and processing, and marketing, the innovating firm undertakes strategic design of its supply chain. The paper illustrates with cases from developed and developing economies, draws policy implications, and lays out a research agenda.

Innovations in consumer products frequently rely on technological advances across multiple tiers in a supply chain. Considering the consumer market demand and downstream investment conditions as input, we model a game in a two-tier supply chain where downstream firms choose to adopt different levels of an upstream technology and an upstream technology leader determines its pricing policy. We identify two necessary but distinct elements for the successful development, adoption, and diffusion of upstream technologies that are sold to lower tiers as components within final products. (1) The level of technology demanded by the market: We develop a measure, Technological Potential, which describes the highest level of an upstream technology demanded by consumer markets. (2) A sufficiently rich return to an upstream innovator, as a function of different levels of technology. From these two elements, we show that the relative magnitudes of two competing sets of consumer market factors determine the Technological Potential whereas the overall magnitude of the factors in both sets determines the return to the upstream developer. We discuss how this difference in consumer market factors' influence on these two elements may determine how different technologies fare in the supply chain. Our results have managerial implications for: investors in research and development project selection in identifying profitable technologies that are also demanded at higher capability levels; and for governments in defining more targeted public policies - for example in choosing the right tier of a supply chain to provide subsidies - to encourage market support for certain technologies.
