Escorting the Monarch
Author: Chris Jagger
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1526720434
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 233
Book Description
Escorting the Monarch is as close to an official history of the Metropolitan Police's 'Special Escort Group' (SEG) as one could hope for.You may have seen the team at work; as the combination of motorcycles and cars pass you by, they glide elegantly and seemingly effortlessly through busy traffic. Developing a dedicated and diligent team culture, they are masters of their trade. They hold a well-earned reputation for excellence amongst their peers; delivering their passengers (and cargo) on time, safely, in a great deal of style, and without fuss or mishap. Professional and precise in the execution of their operations, they are neither shaken nor stirred.Although the work of the SEG demands exquisitely high levels of presentation there is little room for gloss or glitter. The individuals and property they are charged to protect are assessed by government to need the highest possible levels of protection. From queens, kings, presidents and emperors, to priceless works of art, terrorists and high risk prisoners, the group escort them all.Written by the son of a retired SEG officer who himself served in the British Government's security and intelligence community, Escorting the Monarch is told, in part, through first hand stories and anecdotes gleaned from former officers of the group. The insights offered are unique, privileged and first of their kind. Chris Jagger unfolds a collection of fascinating and never before told stories built on high profile events, such as the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill, and the visit of Nelson Mandela. Now the SEG have honed their skills for over 6 decades. Through a carefully constructed description of a changing security and political environment across the decades, and an insightful analysis of the ingenuity of those who have severed with the SEG, _Escorting the Monarch_ explains the events that made the group who they are today.

Atlantic Escorts
Author: David K. Brown
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1783469013
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
“Altogether, a very detailed year-by-year account of escort development for anti-submarine work from the period between the wars to post World War II.” —The Nautical Magazine Winston Churchill famously claimed that the submarine war in the Atlantic was the only campaign of the Second World War that really frightened him. If the lifeline to North America had been cut, Britain would never have survived; there could have been no build-up of US and Commonwealth forces, no D-Day landings, and no victory in western Europe. Furthermore, the battle raged from the first day of the war until the final German surrender, making it the longest and arguably hardest-fought campaign of the whole war. The ships, technology and tactics employed by the Allies form the subject of this book. Beginning with the lessons apparently learned from the First World War, the author outlines inter-war developments in technology and training, and describes the later preparations for the second global conflict. When the war came the balance of advantage was to see-saw between U-boats and escorts, with new weapons and sensors introduced at a rapid rate. For the defending navies, the prime requirement was numbers, and the most pressing problem was to improve capability without sacrificing simplicity and speed of construction. The author analyses the resulting designs of sloops, frigates, corvettes and destroyer escorts and attempts to determine their relative effectiveness. “Atlantic Escorts has flowed from the pen of a master who has written so many fine books about the history of ship construction. It is a small masterpiece.” —Warship International Fleet Review

From Conflict to Conciliation
Author: Parshotam Mehra
Publisher: Otto Harrassowitz Verlag
ISBN: 9783447049146
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 226
Book Description
In the long and chequered annals of the land of the Lama, the twentieth century was a period of considerable turmoil. To start with, the maturity into adulthood of the 13th Dalai Lama (1895) was not a little unusual. Again, not unlike the Great Fifth, he too proved his mettle and survived both a British assault under Younghusband (1904) as well as that of China's Ch'ing rulers (1910-11). Sadly, his strongarm methods soon drove the 9th Panchen into exile - and the arms of the Guomindang regime. Their gap proved hard to bridge and the Lamas died (1933, 1937), virtually unreconciled. Unhappily for their land, the new incarnations too were ranged in opposite camps: the 14th DL, his own master; the 10th Panchen, Mao's protege and harbinger of Tibet's "liberation"(1951). Promises to the contrary notwithstanding, the DL soon discovered his autonomy to be a farce and in the wake of the March (1959) Rebellion fled. Even though the Lamas had inched closer, the Panchen who remained behind presently found himself out of step with his masters. And after a long saga of persecution died (1989), a much disillusioned man. Leaving behind a Dalai Lama in exile and the status of his own incarnation - actually there are two rival candidates - a little less than clear.
