In recent years, the problem of translation has received renewed attention, but it has been mostly approached from a linguistic or ontological perspective. This book focuses on another aspect, i.e. the political and ethical implications of translation. Engaged in a debate, which encompasses various philosophers - such as Schleiermacher, Benjamin, Ortega y Gasset, Quine, Gadamer, Derrida, and Ricur - the book's contributions show that translation can be considered in an ambivalent way (which has a great ethical and political significance) as an attempt to bring the other back to one's own world or, vice versa, as an attempt to open up one's own world and to experience different cultures. What this book intends to do is to study three-dimensionalism (the distinction values-norms-facts) not in what could be called its historical dimension, but in its substantive aspect, as a “form” that, when applied to different legal themes, would add a “material content” to the three-dimensional theory. We can point out, as a study plan, the distinction between “three” perspectives: Those of the legal norm, of the legal order, and the legal relationship. In this wide-ranging historical introduction to philosophical hermeneutics, Jean Grondin discusses the major figures from Philo to Habermas, analyzes conflicts between various interpretive schools, and provides a persuasive critique of Gadamer's view of hermeneutic history, though in other ways Gadamer's Truth and Method serves as a model for Grondin's approach. Grondin begins with brief overviews of the pre-nineteenth-century thinkers Philo, Origen, Augustine, Luther, Flacius, Dannhauer, Chladenius, Meier, Rambach, Ast, and Schlegel. Next he provides more extensive treatments of such major nineteenth-century figures as Schleiermacher, Böckh, Droysen, and Dilthey. There are full chapters devoted to Heidegger and Gadamer as well as shorter discussions of Betti, Habermas, and Derrida. Because he is the first to pay close attention to pre-Romantic figures, Grondin is able to show that the history of hermeneutics cannot be viewed as a gradual, steady progression in the direction of complete universalization. His book makes it clear that even in the early period, hermeneutic thinkers acknowledged a universal aspect in interpretation--that long before Schleiermacher, hermeneutics was philosophical and not merely practical. In revising and correcting the standard account, Grondin's book is not merely introductory but revisionary, suitable for beginners as well as advanced students in the field.

This book will attempt to achieve a constructive and positive correla tion between mythic-symbolic language and philosophical anthropolo gy. It is intended as a reflection on the philosophical accomplishment of Paul Ricoeur. The term mythic-symbolic language in this context means the language of the multivalent symbol given in the myth with its psychological and poetic counterparts. The term symbol is not con ceived as an abstract sign as it is used in symbolic logic, but rather as a concrete phenomenon - religious, psychological, and poetic. The task inherent in this correlation is monumental when one considers the dual dilemma of problematic and possibility which is at its heart. The prob lematic arises out of the apparent difficulty presented by the so-called challenge of modernity which seems to require the elimination of my thic-symbolic language as an intelligible mode of communication. Mythic-symbolic language is sometimes eliminated because in a world molded by abstract conceptualizations of science, such a language is thought to be unintelligible. The claim is that its "primitive" explana tions have been transcended by our modernity. Others believe that the problem of mythic-symbolic language is the problem of the myth. If the mythic forms of language could be eliminated, the truth of such language could be preserved through its translation into an intelligible mode of discourse. The problematic is heightened further by the relation of consider ations of language to philosophical anthropology. Any consideration of language involves a related view of the nature of man.

The turning point occurred with Heidegger's hermeneutics of facticity saw a great flourishing in Gadamer's works. Hermeneutics becomes the philosophy that undermines the scientific parameters of modernity and it looks for an extra-metodica way that leads up to truth through the rediscovery of the cultural values of our European tradition that is art, taste and culture but above all, rhetoric, practical philosophy, and that particular form of judgment called phronesis, which expresses itself in the understanding of the other and in the dialogue. This sensitivity towards the values of tradition, which represents the authentic authority since it's the consent on which the civil society is based, cannot for Gadamer withdraw into itself but it must open itself to the intercultural dialogue as an ethical answer to the challenge of globalization.
